American Legion Auxiliary 63

Nine female veterans were honored by the American Legion Auxiliary on May 9 with a luncheon. Three of the women are members of Louis K. Juden Unit 63 of Cape Girardeau. Seven of the women are residents at Missouri Veterans Home. Each woman received a gift bag. Co-hostesses of the meeting were Jane Grojean and Frieda Howard.

A business meeting was held after the meal. Howard announced the unit has met its goal. Vergie Templeton, Sunshine chairwoman, reported on cards she sent the past month. Myrna Powers, poppy chairwoman, reported Poppy Day was a success and expressed thanks to all who participated in any way, and escpially the American Legion Men.

One hundred dollars will be send to the Department Sons of the American Legion commander, Travis Cummins, to purchase school supplies for children of active duty military personnel. The supplies, along with a handwritten note of encouragement and thanks for their family's sacrifice, will be packed into a backpack. Hero Packs is one of many projects of Operation Military Kids.

A thank-you note was received from the USO World headquarters for a donation sent to them in March.

Edna Smith has invited the eight girls and who will be going to Girls State to the June meeting. Their parents and a club representative who has paid the Girls State fee have also been invited. The meeting will be a potluck at noon June 13.

Cape Girardeau CWU

The Cape Girardeau Area of Church Women United met for its annual May Friendship Day at Maple United Methodist Church on May 4. The theme of the program was "Friends under God's wings." There were 52 women who attended the dinner and program.

Dolly Jewell presented a check for $500 for the state CWU to the third-place winner of the state Church Women United Essay Contest, Hannen Wadi. She also received $25 from the local unit. Her essay was "A mural of colors," which she read to the group.

Dorothy Ford presented the annual scholarship to Kia Cook of Jackson. She received $500 from the Cape Area CWU.

Jewell presented the CWU Valiant Woman Award to Michele Moon.

Barbara Yallaly and Barbara Swan were program leaders. Others taking part in the program were Shirley Patterson, the Rev. Debbie Thornton, Genevieve Dockery, Meta Siemers and Jewell.

American Legion 158

The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met April 10 with Dick Decker, commander, presiding over the meeting.

There was a correction the minutes. The Department Summer Convention will be held July 12 through 15 at Capitol Plaza in Jefferson City, Mo.; the remodeling of the bathroom will cost $11,174; the veterans home will have a drawing and the tickets will be $2.50. The motion was made to accept the minutes as amended. The motion was seconded and passed.

Larry Koehler gave the financial report. P.M. Kurre reported that there are 563 members who have paid dues. Jim Nelson reported on the scholarship fund. Virgil Whitener gave the house report. Bill Sullivan gave the club room report. Leonard Adams gave the dance report.

Lou Crites mentioned that the flags would be going out on at 5 p.m. Friday at Jackson City Cemetery and at 8 a.m. Saturday at Russell Heights Cemetery. The flags will be picked up Tuesday. Help is needed to put the flags up and take them down.

Byron Fluegge gave the trustee's report. He made a motion to give $11,174 for remodeling the bathrooms with handicap accessibility and getting new fixtures. The motion was seconded and passed. This is the second vote.

Dave Hitt made a motion that $300 would be donated for the annual honor guard picnic. The motion was second and passed. The picnic will be held at the hall at noon June 24.

Dave Ludwig talked about the Memorial Day ceremony. It will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Jackson City Cemetery. Speaker will be Chief Master Sgt. David W. Popp. He has been on active duty for 28 years. Ludwig made a motion to take the chairs to the cemetery. The motion was seconded and passed.

John Hopkins introduced Major Andrew Rodgers, who has served in the National Guard for 23 years. He talked about his military career and his tour of duty in Iraq.

There will be a honor guard meeting Monday.

Alpha Mu Master

The Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met in the home of Gwen Nussbaum with Vicki McKinney, president, presiding over the meeting.

McKinney, outgoing president, was presented with a gift certificate to Chico's and a president's gavel for her badge.

Members were reminded to register for the Beta Sigma Phi Missouri State Convention to be held in October in St. Charles, Mo.

Bernie Gardner and McKinney reported that they attended the Beta Sigma Phi city council meeting May 2 at the Cape Gir-ardeau Public Library. Council officers were elected. They are Diane Brown, president; Mary Ann Forrester, vice president; and Cindy Layton, treasurer.

It was announced that Beginning Day in August will be hosted by Epsilon Tau Chapter and Alpha Lambda Master will host the Preferential Tea in the fall. The next council meeting will be Sept. 5.

A Beta Sigma Phi piggy bank was presented to Martha Slaten to present to her new granddaughter, Caroline Michelle, daughter of Stephanie and Jacob Shreve.

Following the meeting, the Ritual of Jewels Degree was held for Dixie Jones and Slaten. Nussbaum received the Laureate Degree and chapter officers were installed. They are: Gardner, president; Mary Schwab, vice president; Judie Herbst, recording secretary; Bobbie Woodward, corresponding secretary; and Carole Calvin, treasurer.

Nessbaum presented the program "Restoring an older home and opening a bed and breakfast in Sesser, Ill." She showed a video and photos of the project.

The next meeting, the end of the year dinner, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Royal N'Orleans restaurant.

Kage FCE

The Kage FCE Club met at the home of Barbara Marshall. Dortha Strack, president, conducted the meeting.

A thank-you note was read from Linda Farrow for the club's help with the Mississippi Valley Therapeutic Horsemanship barn dance held in April. Martha Slaten, Judie Herbst, Strack and Farrow frosted and boxed cakes into individual servings to be served at the dance.

Members were reminded to be thinking about the club's booth for the SEMO District Fair in September. Joan Meyer, Farrow and Marshall will work on this project.

Four members reported that they had attended the FCE Spring District meeting April 26 in Doniphan, Mo. Strack received her 55-year membership certificate at the meeting.

All members brought a book for newborns at Saint Francis Medical Center.

Information was received concerning a benefit for Andy Seyer Jr. and Leonard Bogenpohl to be held June 9. It will be held at the Oak Ridge School cafeteria. Dinner tickets can be obtained from Jo Ann Hahs or Linda Sebaugh. Some members will contribute to the silent auction that will be held.

Barbara Schaffner and Slaten reported on their trip to Jefferson City, Mo., to participate in the "Reading is a Grand Thing" program.

Members signed up for the "crystal club" at the Lutheran Home.

Slaten gave the program "Woman to woman, searching for chocolate."

The next meeting will be June 14 and will be hosted by Shirley Palen.
