New McKendree United Methodist Women met in the fellowship hall May 6 with 26 members present. The meeting was called to order by Mary Klaproth, president, after which the unit recited the UMW Purpose.
Minutes of the last meeting were read by Pam Buck, secretary, and approved as read. Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave her report.
Tina Crites of Esther Circle gave a program with slides of her mission trip with the New McKendree group to Haiti last year.
Chairperson reports: spiritual growth -- Julie Combs gave a devotion "Words of Assurance"; social action -- Klaproth reported that the May collection is for the Food Pantry and the June collection will go to the Susanna Wesley Center; education and interpretation -- Shirley Patterson brought pamphlets from UMW Assembly; membership -- Inez Statler visited the Lutheran Home; and bereavement -- Elwanda Corbin reported they had served one meal.
Wesleyan Circle won the attendance ribbon for this month. A first-time ribbon was presented to Pat Brooks.
Members-at-large Circle will serve Jackson Manor party June 3.
Doris Dace gave a report on the Spring Apron event.
Special recognition pins were presented to three persons on UMW weekend: Amy Thompson, Lynette Moore and Rob Litz for their outstanding mission work this past year.
Combs stressed that she needs plenty of workers for the 100-mile yard sale. Discussion followed concerning advertising that our site will be at High Street this year instead of South Campus.
Day Apart will be held June 21 in Piedmont, Missouri.
The group sang the song "Until All Are Fed."
Klaproth closed the meeting with a reading from the Prayer Calendar and a reading "Today I Can."
Wesleyan Circle members were hostesses.
Town and Country FCE Club met May 8 with Donna Woolsey as hostess. Woolsey gave the devotion, "Does God Exist?"
Thank-you notes were read from Parkview State School, Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center, the Chester McCain family and Linda Thompson. Pennies were collected for Coins for Friendship.
Thompson thanked members for attending the spring leadership training meeting April 4. She reported on the spring district meeting held in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, April 22, which she attended along with Mary Klaproth, Lois Seabaugh and Woolsey.
Klaproth reported on attending Child Advocacy Day held April 1 in Jefferson City, Missouri. MAFCE has participated in Child Advocacy Day since 1996. Gov. Jay Nixon addressed the group. Dolls were delivered to the legislators to later be presented to shelters for children.
Easter treat sacks were delivered to Cottonwood Residential Treatment Center on April 17.
Charlene Jones, Karen Murphy, McCain, Seabaugh and Woolsey reported on the Lutheran Home Volunteer luncheon they attended on April 8.
Under new business, the club discussed the $5 fee charged for the county All Clubs Day and the December council meeting and voted their disapproval of the fee. Members feel it isn't necessary and the club should cover the expenses. The Town and Country FCE Club will vote against the issue at the June council meeting.
Members approved giving $25 to the Clover Kids 4-H Camp and to light a luminary in memory of loved ones of the club for Relay for Life.
Klaproth will do a trivia calendar for July as a fundraiser activity.
All members brought books for newborns in recognition of National Day of the Family and put labels in the books. Seabaugh will deliver the books to Southeast Hospital.
Thompson informed members of a $200 scholarship given by the University of Missouri Extension Council. The deadline to apply is June 16 and more information is available by calling the Extension Center at 243-3581.
The next workday for making weighted blankets for TouchPoint Autism Center will be June 3 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.
The June council meeting will be at 7 p.m. on June 5 at the extension center with Kage FCE giving the devotion.
The program on Crockpot cooking and food safety was presented by Seabaugh, followed by a quiz. Thompson presented a program on chronic pain. In addition, all members participated in the discussion of "Hearth Fire 53 -- Someone's asking ... What is chronic pain? Hurting that doesn't go away.
Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Hickory House in Jackson.
The next meeting will be the club's 48th anniversary party at 6:30 p.m. June 12 at Grecian Steak House in Cape Girardeau. Joyce King and Klaproth will be in charge of arrangements. Members should bring items for the Jackson Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry to the meeting.
