The April meeting of the Young Americans 4-H Club was called to order by Tori Schweer on April 28 at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau. Gary Schweer and Belinda Strack led the pledges. Roll call was answered by stating a favorite Easter candy. There were 18 members and 13 adults attending. April birthdays were recognized, and the club sang "Happy Birthday" to Tyler Kirchdoerfer and Belinda Strack.
Lydia Cameron read the March minutes, Gary Schweer made a motion to approve them, with a second from Alex Eftink. Anthony Strack gave the treasurer's report, Gary Shweer made a motion to approve, with a second from Caitlin Allen.
Bonnie Strack reported that she is still working on getting bids for the new club shirts. Haley and Danielle Ehlers and Anthony and Belinda Strack submitted designs for the Clover Kid Camp shirts.
Belinda Strack reported on the club's April 17 pool party. There were about 30 members in attendance. Anthony Strack reported on the club's Easter visit to the Ratliff Nursing Home, where members handed out eggs and stickers.
Members voted to change the date of the next meeting to May 26 to avoid conflict with graduation and other end-of-the-school-year activities. The motion was made by Gary Schweer and seconded by Devon Allen.
Caitlin Allen gave a demonstration on how to make strawberry slush, and Lydia Reitzel gave a demonstration on clipping the teeth and tails of newborn pigs. Alex Eftink made a motion to adjourn the meeting, seconded by Clayton Kirchdoerfer. Refreshments were provided by the Schaefer and Schweer families.
The New McKendree United Methodist Women met May 3 in the church fellowship hall. Mary Klaproth, president, led members in reciting the UMW Purpose. The minutes were read. Marilyn Fronabarger reviewed the treasurer's report. It was voted to contribute $600 to the youth to attend church camp.
Edith Eggers, program resources, announced she had Response magazines at the meeting if any member would like to use any of them.
The mission collection project for June is the Susanna Wesley Family Learning Center in East Prairie, Mo.
Shirley Patterson, education and interpretation, announced the Cooperative School of Christian Missions will be held in Fayette, Mo., from July 28 through 31. The deadline to register is July 1.
Klaproth announced Day Apart will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church in Piedmont, Mo., on June 11 with reservations due by June 4. The van is reserved and members are to call Klaproth with their reservation.
Winnie Dumey, membership, reminded members to sign the attendance book.
June Engel, supportive community, reported serving a bereavement meal for the Geraldine Stroder family.
Circle reports were given with the Esther Circle having the most members in attendance with 14. Amy Cook, mission ribbon coordinator, presented the circle chairwoman, Elwanda Corbin, with a mission ribbon. Three guests were present which included Rev. Jim Dace, Will Dace and Mary Robertson who received a mission ribbon.
The Esther Circle hoste the Jackson Manor Birthday party May 3 and the members at large will host the party at 2 p.m. on June 7.
Julie Combs reported on the plans for the 100-mile-yard sale to be held at the South Campus on May 26 through 28. Good, usable items are needed. Workers are also needed. Profits will be given to World Service Apportionments. The youth will have a bake sale and food stand at the sale.
Plans were finalized for UMW weekend to be held on May 21 and 22. Sandy Hastings will deliver the message. A number of UMW members will participate in the services. Margie Crites is in charge of placing flowers on the altar. Members were reminded to wear their pins and ribbons for UMW weekend.
The Esther Circle was in charge of the program, which was presented by Dace. The program was a power point presentation on the book "Hope for the Flowers" by Trina Paulus.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on June 7 with the Mary and Martha Circle in charge of the program and the Hope Circle serving refreshments.
Following adjournment, the Wesleyan Circle served refreshments.
The Altenthal-Joerns Post 158 American Legion in Jackson met April 12.
A motion was made by Harry Dryer and seconded by Mike Strack to approve the minutes of the March 8 meeting.
Larry Koehler, finance report, announced Homecomers will be July 26 through 30.
Gerry Keene gave the membership report. There are 481 members with a target membership of 530.
Dave Ludwig gave the Americanism report. Three scholarships will be awarded to one FFA student, one band student and one student from the general populace. A thank-you card from Bernard Schaper was received.
Seven boys have been selected to attend Missouri Boy's State.
The Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on May 30 at Jackson City Cemetery. Guest speaker will be Larry Ferrell, assistant U.S. attorney. Volunteers are needed to load chairs at the American Legion hall at 8 a.m.
Koehler announced that the support group will sponsor a fish fry at the Missouri Veterans Home June 11 or June 28. The American Legion first baseball game will be on May 26. The concession trailer was purchased for $2,000 with remodeling cost at $6,000. The Auxiliary has donated $3,000 for this. There was an emergency vote to allocate funds for trailer, seconded by Poe with the motion passing.
Herb Lichtenegger was presented a certificate for completion of American Legion Leadership training course.
Keith Seabaugh gave a report on the POW-MIA Joint Command and on the new Air Force refueling tanker.
