Zonta Club
The Zonta Club of Cape Girardeau met April 1 at Holiday Inn.
Marcia Southard-Ritter was presented the Women of Achievement award, and Nicole Fadler, a senior at Jackson High School, was presented the Young Woman in Public Affairs award.
April fund raisers were discussed. Proceeds from these fundraisers go to community projects.
The next meeting will be May 6 at Holiday Inn.
American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary met for lunch on April 9 at Grace United Methodist Church. Hostesses were Vergie Templeton and Gladys Lawrence.
A thank-you note was received from the Just Say No Club at Jefferson Elementary School in Cape Girardeau for refreshments provided to them all school year. A thank-you note was received from the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence for supply donations.
Reports were heard from all chairmen. So far 20 3/4 pounds of tab tops have been saved for Ronald McDonald. Final plans were made to plant a tree at Capaha Park baseball field in memory of Truman Howard, a longtime supporter of American Legion baseball.
Over 400 Girls' State favors were made. Unit 63 will be sending six girls to Missouri Girls' State in June. A donation will be sent to St. Jude's Hospital.
A luncheon will be held in May to honor women veterans and gold star mothers and members. A rose will be delivered to The Lutheran Home to resident Alice Wilson, who is a Gold Star Mother.
Twenty-four new blank videotapes were brought to the meeting and Marilyn Ritter will deliver the tapes to the Network Against Sexual Violence. April is Children and Youth Month. Blue Star banners for military families to hang in a window can be purchased.
The next meeting will be May 14. Poppy Day will be May 16, and District Legion Meeting will be on May 18 at Malden, Mo.
The monthly raffle was won by Regina Yeager and a Support Our Troops shirt was won by Lawrence.
Quest Club
Quest Club, MFWC, met April 9 at the home of Lillian Stahly. Carol Blue introduced Jason Schenimann from Scott City High School and Clay Mothershead from Kelly High School. They were sponsored by Quest Club for the Sophomore Pilgrimage held in Jefferson City, Mo., April 7 and 8. They reported on their activities there.
The next meeting will be May 14 at the home of Betty Haas. President Grace Hoover announced the program will be on the newly formed Volunteer Intergenerational Center.
Kage FCE
Kage FCE Club met at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center on April 10. Opal Collins was hostess.
Carol Robert of the Southeast Missourian spoke briefly about the "Faces and Places" history book the newspaper is working on.
It was reported that the club obtained 343 signatures on their "Tune Out Violence" pledge sheets.
Eight members have signed up to attend the Spring District FCE meeting on May 2 in Poplar Bluff.
Four replies were received in the past month from members of the military.
A program on homeland security was given by Marjorie Swan.
Members brought Little Golden Books to be given to children at Cape Girardeau County Health Clinic.
The May 8 meeting will be hosted by Jane Clark.
VFW Ladies Auxiliary
The VFW Ladies Auxiliary met April 10 at Post 3838 with Debbie Griffin presiding. Committee reports were read.
Lucille White was reinstated as a member of the Auxiliary.
Buddy Poppy Days are May 23 and 24. Volunteers are needed and may sign up at the post.
Missouri Veterans Home bingo will be April 26 and volunteers are needed.
Bike Smart will be May 10 at Southeast Missouri Hospital, first parking level, from 8 a.m. to noon. Contact Judy Thrower to help.
Delegates were elected for Department Convention to be held June 26 through 28 in Columbia, Mo.
New officers were elected for year 2003-2004: Debbie Griffin, president; Becky McRaven, senior vice president; Irene Dotson, junior vice president; Judy Thrower, conductress; Pearline Kruse, chaplin; Joy Brown, guard; Vernice Baumstark, three-year trustee; Glennetta Vogelsang, treasurer.
Donations were made to MDA Summer Camp, Young American Patriot Endowment Fund and National Home Endowment Fund. Also, bingo boards were donated to residents at Missouri Veterans' Home.
The ladies will be baking cookies at the post on April 30. They will be delivered on May 1, Loyalty Day, to the auxiliary's Adopt-a-Units. For more information, contact Debbie Griffin.
The next steak night will be May 3 at the post. The district meeting will be May 18 at the Poplar Bluff post.
The next meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary will be May 10 at the post.
Exchange Club
The Exchange Club of Cape Girardeau met April 1 at Port Cape Girardeau.
Ferd Sturm introduced the youths of the month for the third quarter of the 2002-2003 school year. They were Tyler Cuba from Notre Dame Regional High School, Jenny Pinkston from Scott County Central High School, and Clarissa Moore from Cape Central High School. They will join the other six students for the Youth of the Year program May 20.
The Day in the Park program has been rescheduled for April 26.
Sturm is working on the Young Citizenship Award and is trying to schedule the program for May.
The next meeting will be May 6 with Cliff Irvin scheduled to present the program.
