Club news 4/15/12

Southeast B&G Chapter of MAA

The Southeast Black & Gold Chapter of Missouri Alumni Association met April 2 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson. There were three board members, Tom Frasher, Roger Guyot and Larry Simon, present.

Guyot gave the treasurer's report. The balances in both the regular account and the scholarship account are unchanged from last month.

The planned diversity activity, a movie night at 6 p.m. May 2 at Cape 14 Cine for a showing of "Rango," was discussed. The chapter is purchasing 100 tickets for $6 each and giving 97 of those tickets to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cape Girardeau. Frasher, Guyot and Simon will attend and host the event. Simon will purchase the tickets with funds from the chapter's regular account and distribute the tickets this week.

Board members discussed the planned student picnic scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. June 14 at shelter No. 4 in Cape County Park North. The picnic checklist was reviewed and it was determined that most bases are covered. Simon will seek a donation from the Bank of Missouri to help cover picnic expenses.

Simon has prepared the nomination form and resume nominating John Lichtenegger for the Tiger Pride Award. He is waiting on a letter of recommendation to be provided by Donna Lichtenegger before submitting the nomination. They will be submitted before the May 1 deadline.

Frasher received applications from 10 True Tigers for the chapter's $1,000 scholarship. Melody Hagans will work with the student recruitment/scholarship committee to judge the applications and select the winner.

The next meeting will be at 6 p.m. May 7 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Tuesday in the church fellowship hall. The Wesleyan Circle served refreshments before the business meeting. The meeting was opened with the reciting of the UMW Purpose.

The minutes were read by Gale King, secretary, and Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave the treasurer's report. They were approved as read.

Julie Combs moved to give $25 as a gift in memory of the Rev. David Israel's father. Eglena Davis seconded, and the motion passed.

Edith Eggers, secretary of program resources, urged members to take a renewed interest in the reading program.

Mary Klaproth announced that the social action project for next month will be to contribute to the needy children of the Jackson School District.

Inez Statler reported on visiting ladies in area nursing homes.

Klaproth gave a report on the bereavement dinners served to the families of Ralph Dumey, Mildred Varnum and Adelle Hartle. She also thanked all of those who baked cakes and worked to prepare and serve the meals.

The New McKendree United Methodist Women unit was recognized as a five-star unit and received a certificate for items completed on the Mission Today Report at the spring district meeting in Sikeston, Mo., March 24.

Tina Crites moved to give the church $100 for the use of the church van for one year. Doris Dace seconded. The motion passed

The next United Methodist Men's fish fry will be Saturday.

The Esther circle won the mission ribbon, with 12 members present.

The Esther circle will host the Jackson birthday party at 2 p.m. May 1.

UMW weekend will be April 28 and 29. Tara Dameron will be the speaker.

The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. May 1 with the Esther circle presenting the program and Wesleyan circle furnishing the refreshments.

The program was presented by the Esther circle.

Lamplighters FCE Club

Lamplighters FCE's March meeting was a combination business meeting and fun night. There were 10 members and eight guests who met in the home of Jackie Kurre for the evening. Following the carry-in meal, the members conducted a brief business meeting. Minutes were read and the treasurer's report was given.

A $25 contribution was given to the Bollinger County Food Bank.

The evening's entertainment, written by Bev Meyer's husband, Terry Meyer, had the Daisy Dogs reappearing. The Three Dogs, Ron Hahs, Bob McLane and Bill Kurre, showed either a wandering side, were fortuneteller/weight-guessers or sold club real estate.

Bert Seyer was recognized as having had a March birthday.

The next meeting will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the upper level of the University of Missouri Extension Center.

Cape Girardeau County FCE

Cape Girardeau County All FCE Club Day was held April 2 at University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson.

JoAnn Hahs, president of Cape Girardeau County FCE, called the meeting to order. Devotion was given by Ruth Petzzoldt with Cheerful Country Doers. Roll call was given by Mary Klaproth where 43 members were present. Klaproth also gave the recording secretary report from December.

It was announced that Mary Gosche was named Cape Girardeau County program director.

Judy Herbst with Kage Homemakers and Cape Girardeau FCE vice president and program chairwoman was in charge of the program, "Show Me Missouri Games," during the morning session. The games will be donated to a local school. This was sponsored by a grant from Missouri FCE.

Sue Jones reported that Pete Pope from the SEMO District Fair Board announced Cape County FCE Fair booths will be placed on the main floor in the Arena Building in September.

A lunch was sponsored by FCE Lamplighters Club.

The afternoon program, "Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition," was given by Brandy Wooldridge, intern. This is a not-for-profit organization to address a growing problem of youth substance abuse in the community, and it partners with the Jackson and Cape Girardeau police departments. A drop-off location for all unused or expired medication will be held 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 28 at the Jackson and Cape police departments plus they may be dropped off at 210 N. Sprigg St. in Cape Girardeau and West Park Mall parking lot in a designated place. For information, call 573-587-1921.

JoAnn Hahs and Linda Freeman, both from Lamplighters FCE, gave a program on "Gems of the Earth," where they take white potatoes, peel, cut, dry and paint them, then varnish and string with all colorful beads to make necklace and earrings sets. This was a project they started with proceeds going to the First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge to fund a partnership with a church in El Salvador.

Membership recognition and pins were given out by Lois Seabaugh, Roberta Allen and Sarah Ross. Those recognized were: five years, Frances Jenkins, Oak Ridge; 20 years, Ruth Petzoldt, Cheerful Country Doers, Jean Rehak, Oak Ridge, Judith Myers, Lamplighters; 30 years, Beverly Meyer, Lamplighters; 45 years, Linda Thompson, Town and Country, Carolyn Thompson, Town and Country; 50 years, Jane Clark, Kage; and 65 years, Mary Dee Ford, Oak Ridge.

Club recognition for 45 years was given to Town and Country FCE.

Gosche gave a review of Cape County FCE Club work where pictures from all groups were showed.
