Progressive Club
The Progressive Club met March 28 at the home of Shirley Cracraft with Deloris Meyr as co-hostess, with 16 members present. Guests were Kathy King, Beverly Kiehne and Sharon Hanning.
Ellen Lorberg gave the program on her trips to Ocean Springs, Miss., in helping Katrina victims and clean up.
Barbara Lorberg handed out copies of the constitution and by-laws for review and update. Members are to read and discuss at the next meeting.
Cracraft reported on the upcoming trip to Ironton, Mo., planned for April 22. The group will eat at Grant's Inn.
Cracraft also gave a demonstration on whipping up her chiffon cake.
Shirley Beggs made motion to adjourn, seconded by Jean Dudley.
Refreshments were served and meeting adjourned.
Commander Larry Koehler opened the March 14 meeting of the Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 of Jackson, with chaplain Boyd Summers giving the opening prayer.
Dilbert Miller was introduced as a transferred member.
David Hitt introduced his son, Mike, who recently returned from Iraq, and gave a program that included photos and videos of his tour.
It was reported that membership is at 538, including 40 who have not paid for 2006.
Giving the trustees report, Lou Crites stated he wanted to start on redoing the bathrooms. Bill Poe reported buying a tank of gas for a veteran and again announced Homecomers will be the last week in July. Gary Kamp reported meeting with the FFA and getting help with Homecomers.
Mike Strack delivered a report on replacing flags at New McKendree United Methodist Church and schools. He also got in touch with a woman who has signs and a price list for markers to be used in the city cemeteries.
Rosie Wells discussed the services conducted by the Honor Guard, which was to have its photograph taken following the meeting.
Contributions to the Post 158 memorial scholarship program were announced.
It was announced that the post will be sending nine boys to Boys State this year.
Members voted to give $4,400 for the ball teams.
Koehler discussed meeting with Jackson's mayor and the Veterans of Foreign Wars commander and showed proposed plans for the new baseball field. A motion was made and approved that the stored bingo equipment be donated to the Missouri Veterans Home.
The Birthday Banquet will take place April 16; a district meeting is scheduled for May 21 at the post.
The Cape Girardeau County chapter of AARP 4041 met on April 3, with 37 members present and one visitor.
Tina Dohogne, director, delivered a program titled "RSVP -- Retired Senior Volunteer Program."
Upcoming events will feature day of service, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 11, at the Cape Girardeau Senior Center, and a roundtable, May 22, at the Jackson Senior Center.
The next meeting will be May 1.
Matthew Golden, president, presided over the April 6 meeting of the Tilsit 4-H Club at the Gordonville Fire Station, No. 2 near Tilsit.
There were 19 members and 11 guests present. Morgan Bangert and David Gholson led the pledges; songs were led by Ryan Aufdenberg, Tanner Schabbing, Collin Schabbing and Matthew Brucker.
Brucker also delivered a talk on how to show a pig at a fair.
Project meetings were discussed by the following groups: foods B, woodworking, beef and cake decorating.
The next meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. May 4 at the Gordonville Fire Station.
The United Methodist Women of New Salem Church in Daisy, Mo., met April 5 at the home of Jackie Kurre. The meeting was conducted by president Dorothy Hahs; Shirley Grebe recited the pledge and opened with a prayer.
The group received a thank-you note from Addie Henley.
There were 21 sick/shut-in calls made during March. A nursing home visitation list was compiled and the sunrise Easter breakfast was planned.
Kurre is still working on getting a sound system for the fellowship hall. The Mother/Daughter Banquet committee will meet soon to plan for the May banquet.
Margie Roberts shared correspondence received from the Billy Graham Ministries about sending gospel CDs and movies to troops serving overseas. Roberts will be in charge of submitting any names for these gifts.
Betty Hahs presented an Easter program.
The next meeting will be the Mother/Daughter/Friend Banquet on May 3 at the New Salem Church.
The Xi Nu Phi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met April 4 at the home of Cathy Pancoast. Discussion was held regarding the Order of the Rose. Several members are eligible for this award. Plans will be finalized at a future meeting. Easter Secret pal gifts were given out. The next meeting will be held at El Torero Restaurant in Jackson on April 18. The program was on The National Health Test and presented by Pancoast.
The Alpha Mu Master chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met recently at the home of Gwen Nussbaum, with president Margaret Little conducting the meeting.
Members brought items for Project Hope, the chapter's monthly service project.
Plans were made to attend the annual all-chapter Founders Day Banquet to be held at 6 p.m. April 24 at Dempster Hall on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
Plans were also made for the "end of the year" dinner to be held May 22 at N'Orleans.
Nussbaum, the chapter's Valentine Queen, was crowned at this meeting. She has been in Arizona for the past three months.
Prior to the meeting, vice president Carole Calvin led pledge training for new member Dixie Jones.
Nussbaum presented the program, as she discussed her travels through the Southwest.
The next regular meeting will be May 8 at the home of Bobbie Woodard.
The annual Lions Club District 26D Convention was held in Kennett on March 17-18 with district governor Murray Dunn presiding.
Attending from Cape Girardeau were Dorothy Cox, Laurie Taylor, Allen Taylor and Ed Tilley, all members of the Cape Evening Lions Club.
The keynote speaker was L. Doug Sime, international director. Following Sime's address, Robert McKlin, immediate past district governor, presented the Melvin Jones Fellowship awards. Receiving a diamond pin in recognition of his second progressive Jones award was Tilley of Cape Girardeau.
A service of remembrance, led by Carolyn Tetley, was held, and Jody Gosnell, Cape Evening Club secretary, was one of those remembered.
The 89th International Convention will take place June 30 to July 4 in Boston, Mass.
