Laureate Alpha Rho

The Laureate Alpha Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met March 16 at the home of Marion Edwards at Saxony Village.

Edwards gave a program on the story of the tomb of the unknown soldier.

A vote was taken for the girl of the year. The winner will be announced at the next meeting.

New officers were elected. They are Rosanna Whitnel, president; Erma Vaughn, vice president; Rhoda Reeves, secretary; Bonnie Hennessy, treasurer; and Edna Hey, corresponding secretary.

The next meeting will be held April 24 at Dempster Hall at Southeast Missouri State University. It will be the Founder's Day celebration with all Cape and Jackson chapters participating.

New Salem UMW

The United Methodist Women of New Salem Church in Daisy met at the home of Shirley Grebe on March 8.

Grebe, vice president, opened the meeting and went over the correspondence the club received.

The fall meeting will be on Sept. 9 at Poplar Bluff, Mo.

The yearly mission report for 2005 was read, and ordering mission ribbons was discussed. A thank-you note was read from Goldie Hobeck and family, and various other correspondence was discussed. There 35 sick/shut-in calls made during January and February.

Jackie Kurre is sill working on getting a sound system for the fellowship hall. A new nursing home visitation schedule will be made. The Easter breakfast was discussed and plans are starting for the mother/daugher banquet in May and the father/son banquet in June. It was agreed that the quarterly pledge would be given to the club's adopted elderly person.

Grebe presented the program on World Day of Prayer on South Africa. An offering was taken for World Day of Prayer. The next meeting will be at the home of Kurre on April 5.

Alpha Mu Master

The Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Mary Schwab. Margaret Little, president, presided over the meeting.

The Chapter Record was received from the International Office and a note was received from member Gwen Nussbaum, who is in Arizona.

Members brought items for Project Hope, the chapter's monthly service project.

Judie Herbst distributed registration information for those interested in attending the 2006 Beta Sigma Phi Missouri State Convention to be held at the University Plaza Hotel and Convention Center in Springfield, Mo., Oct. 6 through 8.

Regina VonHassein was the guest speaker for the evening. She presented a program on scrapbooking.

Pledge training was led by Carole Calvin, vice president, for new member Dixie Jones.

The next regular meeting will be at the home of Calvin. Election of officers for the coming year will be held at this meeting.

Nancy Hunter Chapter

The Nancy Hunter Chapter of NSDAR met Feb. 22 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library with 34 people in attendance. Catherine Allison and Dorothy Points were co-hostesses.

Patsy Robert, chairwoman for the Good Citizen Award, opened the meeting with the winners reading their essays. They were presented a pin. Winners were, John Henry Kipper of Cape Central High School, Tiffany Myers of Oak Ridge High School, Emily Henderson of Delta High School and Abby Moore of Notre Dame Regional High School. Their families and school administrators were also guests.

Points, vice regent, presented pins to Kent Crider and Bobbie Ann Mason of K103-FM radio station for their showing of patrotism by opening their broadcast daily at 5:30 a.m. with the national anthem and Pledge of Allegiance. Certificates were awarded to Carla Leible, general manager of River Radio. Chloe Crouch was also given a certificate for being the youngest sign-off announcer.

Elizabeth Krueger Billham, regent of the chapter, and Susannah Smith Elliot of Summersville, S.C., were guests.

A motion was made to accept 10 new members. They were voted on and approved.

St. Mary CCW

St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met March 16 in the Monsignor Huels Room of the parish office building.

Joan Eggimann, president of DCCW, was a guest. She encouraged all to attend the spring assembly to be held at Drury Lodge on April 28 and 29. She showed a copy of a book by Linda Schaefer, a photojournalist who accompanied Mother Teresa on her travels. Schaefer will be the speaker at the assembly.

Tables can be rented for $10 at the Community Garage Sale to be held April 1. There will also be a bake sale and breakfast and lunch will be served.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, green food was collected for the food pantry.

Julia Grider, Shirley Reeves and Imelda Nenninger won prizes for St. Patrick's Day attire. Green refreshments were served by the March Circle.

Nancy King and Diane Schaefer will hold nominating committe for president and vice president.

Charlene Holton will present the program at the April 20 meeting. She operated the Chocolate Garden and has sculptures in chocolate.

Progressive Club

The Progressive Club met at the home of Joan Battle with Earlene Sokowski serving as co-hostess. Elvia Percival gave a short devotion.

David Hitt with the Cape Girardeau County Emergency Preparedness gave a program on earthquake preparedness.

A trip to Ironton, Mo., was discussed.

Oak Ridge FCE

Billie Criddle was hostess to the Oak Ridge FCE Homemakers Club on March 21.

Marilyn Retherford reported having the club's adopted families. Carole Jo Byrd and daughter, Betty Dellinger and Criddle attended the March birthday party at Jackson Manor and served refreshments to residents.

Jean Rehak, Francis Jenkins and Nelda Crader attended the Leader Training Meeting where they learned information to be used in meeting programs for the year. Rehak and Retherford attended the March council meeting and reported on upcoming dates to be remembered.

The club will be mailing cash for phone cards to two members of the armed forces serving in Iraq.

Paper products were brought for the local food pantry, and pictures were made and prices recorded to be used for club records.

Retherford, county chairwoman, reported that Cape Girardeau County's entry for the Literacy Contest on the district level had received third place.

Crader showed her framed award given to her recently on being chosen the outstanding woman for the Extension Honor Roll.

Members paid for the banquet they will be attending at the SEMO FCE meeting to be held in Jackson on April 27. Rehak and Jenkins will be assisting the Cheerful Country Doers with making favors for the event.

Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club

The March meeting of the Capaha Scottish Rite Women's Club convened at Delmonico's in Jackson with 12 members and two guests in attendance.

President Luella Armstrong presided and led the Pledge of Allegiance. Chaplain Omega Hawkins gave the table prayer.

A letter from the American Lung Association was read during the club's business session.

Program chairman Violet Reynolds, hostess Freda Smothers and Vesta Mae Meyer carried the St. Patrick's Day theme. Mae read "Little Children Saying," "You Know When You Are Getting Older," "Where Did You Get Up To Go" and "St. Patrick's."

Laura Cook and Doyle Mouse won hostess gifts.

The April 10 meeting will be held at Frontier restaurant in Fruitland; Doris Hurst as hostess and Norma Yost as program chairman.

Xi Nu Phi of Beta Sigma Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met March 21 at the home of Sheryl Smith. The chapter welcomed Martha Slaten as a vistor. It was announced that Mary Stuart, a former chapter member who has moved out of the area, had a baby boy. Plans were discussed and agendas distributed for the Founder's Day Banquet to be held in April which the Xi Nu Phi chapter is hosting.

Plans were finalized for the Nashville Flea Market, which members attended March 24 and 25. A section of the Beta Sigma Phi Book was reviewed.

Election of officers for the 2006-2007 year were held with the following taking office: president Tammy Monia, vice president Debbie Balsano, recording secretary Renee Hesselrode, corresponding secretary Cindy Propst, treasurer Sharon Hinkebein, extension Susan Perdue, city council representative Linda Biri, and secret pal Sheryl Smith.

The next meeting will be April 4 at Cathy Pancoast's home.
