The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met Jan. 26 at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. The guest speaker was Dr. Frank Nickell, director of The Center for Regional History at Southeast Missouri State University. He spoke on the history of the land in the area of the casino coming to Cape Girardeau.
Sheila Holloway, regent, opened the meeting with the rituals. Ruth Lang read the minutes and they were approved. Our regent read the treasury report due to the treasurer, LaFern Stiver, being in a St. Louis hospital having surgery.
Charlotte Slinkard announced we had as new approved member, Jackie Lowes, who was in attendance. Also, the club has four perspective members.
The next meeting will be our Good Citizens Awards, to be held at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 23, in the Geraldine Hirsch Community Room at the library. Hostesses will be Edna Ruth Fischer and Slinkard. Members are asked to bring a dozen fresh-made cookies to serve with punch. There are three contestants signed up to give their essay, one each from Chaffee, Oak Ridge and Cape Girardeau.
The Lamplighters FCE Club gathered in the home of Judy Myers on Jan. 25. President Karen McLane called the meeting to order and had members repeat the Pledge of Allegiance and the Membership Pledge. Then Sharon Bogenpohl, song leader, led the group in singing the Club Collect. The hostess gave a devotional titled "Welcome to Holland."
It was reported that the Christmas display in Cape County Park had been removed and stored. There have been 23 more chair covers delivered to Oak Ridge Elementary for the first grade class, and an order placed for 14 more.
The Jan. 11 work day for weighted autism items was canceled because of weather, but members have been laundering fabric, stripping fabric and sewing together fabric for blankets and lap pads.
A thank-you note was received for the Christmas "love" package sent to Cody Hinkebein, a U.S. Marine serving in Afghanistan.
Members then reviewed the 2011 program books, noting areas of special emphases. They signed up to serve on the working club committees for the year -- autism weighted items, books for newborns, chair covers, Christmas display, SEMO District Fair booth, granddaughter's day, Oak Ridge yard sale, "Storybook Tails" and tours.
The following members will represent the club at the March 21 Spring Leader Training: Jackie Kurre, diabetes; Bogenpohl, hazard of new technology; and Gayla Volz, stay strong, healthy bones.
Karen Eakers presented an informative program on women and money. Plus, the club's by-laws were read and reviewed.
Reminders and announcements were as follows: workday for the autism weighted items at the University of Missouri Extension Center, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 14.; and July 14 to 17. NAFCE 75th Annual Conference in Denver.
The McKendree United Methodist Women met Tuesday in the church fellowship hall. Mary Klaproth, president, led the group in reciting the UMW Purpose.
Gale King, secretary, read the minutes from the December general meeting and from the January Mission Team meeting. The minutes were approved.
Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave the treasurer's report from December and January.
Edith Eggers, secretary of program resources, reported that she had the "Response Magazine" available to anyone wishing to borrow it for programs.
Laura Jo Smith reported that the theme for 2011 Prayer and Self-Denial is: "Property makes mission possible."
Shirley Patterson, education and interpretation chairperson, announced that the study for the School of Missions this year will be "Coming out on the side of grace." The country for the study will be Haiti.
The Legislative event will be on March 1 and 2 in Jefferson City, Mo. Julie Combs, Amy Cook, Elwanda Corbin, Sue Jones, Patterson and Klaproth will be attending the meeting.
Cook presented a mission ribbon to our guest, June Warder.
The Wesleyan circle won the attendance mission ribbon with five members present.
The United Methodist Men will have their next fish dinner Feb. 19. The United Methodist Women's Circles will furnish cakes for the fish dinner.
Wesleyan Circle hosted the Jackson Manor birthday party Tuesday. Mary and Martha Circle will be hosts March 1.
Combs moved that the March UMW general meeting be changed from March 1 to March 8 because several members will be attending the Legislative event in Jefferson City. Laura Jo Smith seconded and the motion carried.
Gladys Nitsch moved that we sponsor the 100-Mile Yard Sale May 26 through 28 and that the proceeds from the sale will be for World Service Apportionments. Corbin seconded and the motion was approved. Combs will be chairperson for the event.
United Methodist Women's weekend will be May 14 and 15. Klaproth will seek a speaker for the event.
Warder gave a program on prayer and self denial. The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. March 8 with the Hope Circle presenting the program and the members-at-large providing refreshments.
The meeting closed with a reading from the Prayer Calendar.
