Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Feb. 2 at the home of Susan Benton, president. She called the meeting to order with eight members present.

The minutes from the last meeting were approved as read. A vote was taken on the grant proposals from International.

A thank-you note was received from Hope Children's Home in Jackson for gift cards that the chapter had sent them.

Reservations were taken for those who would be attending the Valentine's Day brunch at Dalhousie Golf Club on Feb. 13. A vote was taken for Valentine queen. The event was hosted by Torchbearer Epsilon.

A game night for our chapter will be held on Feb. 20.

Xi Nu Phi chapter will host an Easter egg hunt for the Lambda Omicron on March 19.

Secret sister gifts were passed out and they were all homemade Valentine gifts. The program was decorating Valentine cookies.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday, at the home of Cindy Propst.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Feb. 2 in the church fellowship hall with 17 members present. The meeting was called to order by Mary Klaproth, president, followed by the unit reciting the UMW Purpose.

The minutes of the previous general meeting and the mission team meeting were read and approved. Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave a December/January report.

Chairperson reports:

Program resources: In Marica Eggers' absence, Klaproth reported a check for $500 will be received to be spent on the library. Klaproth suggested the UMW library and church library be combined and that we try to promote its use.

Spiritual growth: Julie Combs read a poem titled "Grandpa's Hands."

Social action: Bonnie Blechle reported that the February emphasis will be call to prayer and self-denial and March will be the food pantry. Food items or money can be given.

Education and interpretation: Shirley Patterson highlighted articles in the UMW News. Our call to prayer and self-denial offerings go 100 percent toward national and international programs. In three years, UMW will celebrate 150 years with the theme "Building a Legacy."

Membership: Blechle reported visiting nursing homes and sending cards.

Mission ribbons: Elwanda Corbin has mission ribbons available today to purchase.

Bereavement meals: Blechle stated they had served four meals.

The Legislative Event will be held March 8 and 9, with four planning to attend from New McKendree UMW: Doris Dace, Shirley Patterson, Linda Thompson and Klaproth.

The Esther Circle won today's attendance ribbon.

The Go Team Fish Fry and UMW bake sale will be held 4 to 7 p.m. Feb. 27. Baked items are to be at South Campus by 3 p.m. or can be dropped off earlier at the High Street location. That location will be open by 9 a.m. The bake sale will be set up inside away from the front door. Cake assignments for the fish fry are Esther, Hope and Mary and Martha Circles are to furnish five cakes each, Wesleyan one cake, and Members-at-large two cakes. Blechle made a motion that the group make and freeze casseroles to sell. Combs seconded the motion. Motion passed. We will meet at 9 a.m. Friday in the fellowship hall to prepare the casseroles.

The Members-at-large Circle will host the Jackson Manor birthday party on March 14.

UMW weekend will be May 21 and 22. The speaker will be announced later.

The UMW will sponsor the 100-Mile-Yard sale May 26 through 28. Dace made a motion that proceeds be given to the church for World Service Apportionments. Marilyn Fronabarger seconded the motion. Motion passed.

Members were reminded to continue collecting canceled stamps.

The UMW will again pack boxes on Feb. 29 at the SEMO Food Bank in Sikeston, Missouri, and will leave from the church at 8:15 a.m.

World Day of Prayer is at 1 p.m. March 4 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

UMW Spring District Meeting has a date change and will be April 9 at New Salem United Methodist Church, with registration beginning at 9:30 a.m.

Combs gave the program on call to prayer and self-denial.

Members enjoyed the stone soup prepared by the mission team with three guests from the church office staff.
