Kage FCE

Dortha Strack was hostess when members of the Kage FCE Club met at the MU Extension Center in Jackson for their November meeting. Prior to the meeting, members attended the Veterans Day Program at the Jackson High School Auditorium presented by the Music Department of the school.

In lieu of a devotional, a tribute was paid to family members who have served in the military

A report was given on the annual chicken and dumpling family dinner held in October.

The rest of the Christmas cards for the Military Mail project were collected. Shirley Palen packaged and mailed them before the deadline.

Jo Daume, Sarah Ross, and Barbara Marshall reported on the "Reading is Grand" program they are involved in at Jefferson Elementary School in Cape Girardeau.

The annual Kage Club College Scholarship will be presented to Andrew Strack.

The program on mental fitness was presented by Joan Meyer.

Following the program, Strack gave members a test on the "Show Me Book of Missouri" that the club has been reviewing this year.

Nancy Hunter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met Dec. 3, at the Missouri Veterans Home to host a luncheon for the female veterans. There are four ladies living there at present. Seven of our members shared this time with the ladies. Our DAR group presented each of the female veterans with a red poinsettia brought in by Ruth Lang.

Club members shared a delicious luncheon at noon and the veteran ladies were asked to tell their duties as they served their country.

The next meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Penzel Room at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. Dr. Frank Nickell, director of The Center of Regional History, will present a program of history.

SE B&G Chapter of MAA

We met at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. Four board members, Tom Frasher, Jill Kohut, Roger Guyot, and Larry Simon, and a guest, Richard Proffer, were present.

Kohut gave the treasurer's report.

Frasher gave a report on our activity report and explained the Columns requirements for Capstone Status. We need to put some emphasis on recruiting new members because we have only one new member to date and we must have five to meet the Foundation Requirement under Responsibility. We will again submit John Lichtenegger as our Tiger Pride nominee to meet the Foundation Requirement under Pride. We have made good progress toward meeting our requirements, and have plans in place to meet others.

Frasher asked if we would like to purchase tickets for the Insight Bowl to donate to military families so they can attend the game. We decided that we would purchase two tickets at a cost of $128 to donate to military families. This is contingent on adequate funds remaining in our MAA allotment. Frasher volunteered to purchase the tickets and make the donation in the name of our Chapter, and then seek personal reimbursement from our MAA allotment. It is our understanding that we will receive Columns credit under Tradition for the ticket donation.

We discussed our proposed networking event where we will be targeting recent college graduates who are either unemployed or underemployed. Proffer reported that he had contacted the State of Missouri Career Center and spoke with Robin Strop and Terry Dempster. They indicated that Jan. 19 would be the best day for them to put on a Resume Workshop and a Job Interview Workshop. We decided that we would like to hold the event at 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 19 at the MU Extension Center in Jackson. There will be two 1 1/2 hour workshops. Proffer will e-mail Strop and Dempster to tell them what we want. If they are in agreement, Frasher will contact Stephanie Heffernan to request she send emails to recent (within the last two years) MU graduates, informing them of the event. We will also put word out concerning the event to other college graduates via the media. All interested people will be asked to contact the MU Extension Center to register. After the workshops, we will proceed to set up the second phase of our networking project, which will be to put the recent graduates face to face with local employers.

There was some discussion regarding our annual Founders Day Event. The event will be held on Feb. 24 at Dexter Bar-B-Que in Cape Girardeau. Simon presented a list of the 17 silent auction items we had at last year's event. Frasher will send an e-mail to Board Members, asking them to start working on obtaining auction items for the upcoming event. Simon will contact some of the people who donated items last year. We still need someone, either Jamie Phenix or Melody Hagans, to contact a member of the Oliver family, requesting them to be our speaker at the event. We have the option of purchasing MU items, such as autographed balls, via the MAA to be used as auction items. Simon suggested that we solicit the MAA for donated auction items. We also discussed the possibility of a framed Tiger on the Quadrangle picture as a possible auction item.

We had no updates on our proposed 2011 Diversity Project.

We will not hold a watch party for the Insight Bowl game. The ticket donation to a Military family should provide us with the Columns credit we would normally receive for the watch party.

It was decided that we want to hold another student picnic. We want to again hold the picnic in June at Shelter #4 in Cape County Park North. A tentative date for the picnic is June 16. The format will probably be similar to last year's event, with the hope of having more students this time.

The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 3 at the MU Extension Center.

New McKendree UMW

The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Dec. 7 in the church fellowship hall. To open the meeting, Mary Klaproth, president, led the group in reciting the UMW Purpose.

Klaproth thanked Dawn Detring, Betty Henry, Laura Jo Smith and Sue Smith for helping her assemble the 2011 UMW Book.

Wendel presented the Mission Pin to McCallister. This pin is given in recognition to one who has exhibited a special effort for the church, for UMW and for their Circle. McCallister has taught Sunday School, taught a Bible study class, hosted the church Sunday morning social hour and has been chairperson of the Hope Circle for several years. Jolie's mother, Pam Jones, was present the pin to her daughter.

Sherry Hammes and Henry installed the officers for 2011. Hames gave each new officer a Christmas Angel ornament in appreciation for their service. They are: Klaproth, president; Gladys Nitsch, vice president; King, secretary; Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer; Eggers, secretary of program resources; Laura Jo Smith, Sue Smith and Julie Combs, committee on nominations; Pat Lynn, spiritual growth; Green, social action; Shirley Patterson, education and interpretation; Dumey, membership nurture and outreach; Amy Cook, mission ribbons and coordinator; Detring, historian; Wilcoxson and Engel, supportive community; and Summers, volunteer.

The program was presented by Members-at-large.

The next meeting will be a Mission Team Meeting at 7 p.m. on Jan. 4.

The meeting was closed with a reading from the Prayer Calendar.

Refreshments were served by Members-at-large.
