Club news 11/26/03

American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary met Nov. 12 for the monthly meeting. A light lunch was served by hostesses Regina Yeager and Lawana Wulfers. President Iola Amelunke conducted the opening ceremony and called the meeting to order.

A video, "Stars and Stripes," was shown. Members were commended for bringing various items to be sent to Iraq, an estimated value of $100. Chairmen received Plans of Work for the 2003-2004 year. Legislative chairman Dorothy Klein reported the legion will focus this year on Boy Scouting and VA care, especailly for veterans returning from active duty. The legion has endorsed a movement to keep "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. A thank-you note was received from the Alternative Education Center thanking us for bringing soda and chips for their break area.

Americanism chairman Peggy Blaylock took Halloween coloring books, a brochure "Make Halloween Safe," and treats to the Girl Scout troop sponsored by the legion. These same items were taken by Barbara Yallaly to the "Just Say No to Drugs" club at Jefferson Elementary School. SALT representative Frieda Howard announced plans have been made for the Christmas Tour of Lights. Reservations are due by Dec. 15 for the tour on Dec. 18. Call the Cape Senior Center.

Community chairman Myrna Powers asked all members to participate in the Boy Scout and Cape Girardeau florist food drive. FISH and Gibson Recovery Center will be the recipients. A donation will be sent to Crimestoppers to support the Guardian program of fighting crime.

The next meeting will be Dec. 10 at the home of Yallaly. Bring a covered dish, a gift for exchange and items to take to Jefferson Elementary School for their holiday store.

Amsberg 4-H Club

Amsberg 4-H Club met Nov. 7 at Trinity Lutheran Church fellowship hall with 32 members, seven leaders and 10 guests present.

Jessica Seyer presided over the meeting, with Kyle Rohde and Grace Fox leading songs and Devon Beard leading pledges. A Halloween party with games was held.

Plans are being made for a Christmas party in December. Bring gifts for care packages.

Friendship Club

The Friendship Club met on Nov. 11 at the home of Wilma Grossheider. Elsie Gerecke presided over the meeting. Thanksgiving prayer was given by the hostess.

Louise and Gene Schrader of St. Louis, Mo., presented the program and showed slides of Costa Rica.

Each member prepared a dish for the meal.

Members will gather at Cracker Barrel on Dec. 9 for lunch at 11 a.m. and then gather at the home of Evelyn Moore for a gift exchange.

Cape West Rotary Club

Larry Jackson has been chosen as the GSE team leader to Italy. Also, the club received word it has received a CAP Grant.

The club is at 83 percent for the polio campaign and a 100 percent club with ear surgeries, eye surgeries and literacy project.

The Christmas party fellowship will be held at 6 p.m. Dec. 18 at Buckner's Brewery.

The club meets at noon every Thursday at Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge. There will not be meetings on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1.

Xi Nu Phi

Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Nov. 18 at the home of Cindy Propst. Members completed the table decorations for the Exemplar/Preceptor Banquet held Nov. 19 at Dexter Bar-B-Que. Plans were tentatively made to attend "The Nutcracker" in December.

Shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child were turned in. Sunshine gifts were distributed.

The next meeting will be Dec. 2 at the home of Sheryl Smith-Woeltje.

Scottish Rite Club

The November meeting of the Scottish Rite Women's Club was held at Delmonico's in Jackson. Luella Armstrong presided. Joyce Peerman was hostess and Debbie Hay was program chairman.

Doris Hurst read "Unfurl the Flag" and did a flag tribute for Veterans Day. Guest speaker Ron Clark gave a talk on the Shriners' Hospital.

There will be no meetings held in December, January or February. The next meeting will be March 8, with location to be announced.

Eastside Homemakers

The Eastside Homemakers Club met at Tracy's Place on Nov. 19. Janet Piepenbrok voiced the table prayer.

The Dec. 17 meeting will be held at 11 a.m. at Delmonico's in Jackson. Members are asked to bring an article for the food pantry.

Oak Ridge FCE

Oak Ridge FCE members recently enjoyed their annual carry-in Thanksgiving turkey dinner at the home of president Marilyn Retherford. Barbara Brown, a guest and prospective member, gave a reading on turkeys.

The Dec. 4 Cape Girardeau County Council meeting will be attended by member Kim Begley. A salad luncheon, auction and installation of County Council officers will be among the activities for the meeting.

Programs on honey by Begley and estate planning by Nelda Crader concluded the necessary programs for the year.
