American Legion 158
The Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 met Sept. 13 with Larry Koehler, commander, presiding.
Rob French, the American Legion Junior baseball team coach, gave the program. He reviewed the team's year and the players' accomplishments.
The minutes were approved as written. Richard Aguilar gave the financial report, and P.M. Kurre reported membership at 616. Bill Poe reported on service. He said that the post no longer has any crutches or walking canes and made a motion that the post have Homecomers next year and that it be held the last week in July. The motion was seconded and passed.
Gary Kamp asked the adjutant to send a thank-you letter to Jackson High School FFA for its help in setting up the stage at Homecomers. Koehler informed the members that the executive committee had voted to give the FFA a plaque and designate one of the annual scholarships for a FFA student.
Jack Latimer reported Homecomers' income at $11,700. Koehler read a note from the city of Jackson commending the post for its operation of Homecomers. The city also donated the man hours required for daily cleanup.
Lou Crites reported the Homecomers' hamburger stand had a profit of $2,286.86.
The following contributions were made to the memorial scholarship fund: from the friends in American Legion Club Room in memory of Gladys Strong; donations in memory of Robert Hutson from Don and Judy Starzinger, Paul L. Hutson, David and Jackie Hutson, Geraldine Kassel; and from John C. Crites in memory of Verlin Statler and Hutson.
David Ludwig reported on thank-you notes from Melanie Grindstaff and post scholarship recipients; and Andrew Graham, chapter chief Shawnee Chapter of the Order of the Arrow. He also reported letters from Craig D. Richie, director of the American Legion Boys State of Missouri Inc., thanking the post for sponsoring Robert Alane Cheney Jr. and Jacob Daniel Sailer to Boys State of Missouri in 2005.
Ludwig reported that announcements have been sent to area schools on the Legion oratorical contest. Ludwig reported plans are being made for the Veterans Day parade and program to be held on Nov. 11.
Virgil Whitener reported the hall rental for the month and Latimer gave the club report. Koehler reported $100 had been given to the Davis Memorial Fund.
Keith Seabaugh reported on attending the national convention and talked about the legion sponsorship of a NASCAR car and the potential of sale of NASCAR items.
