The Cape Girardeau Area Church Women United had their annual Awareness Luncheon at New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. Marilyn Fronabarger and Joyce King, president, welcomed guests and members.

The purpose of this meeting was to learn about agencies that are in the community. The seven agencies represented were United Way, Nancy Jernigan; Love in the Name of Christ, Denise Wimp; 40 Developmental Assets -- Community Initiative, Community 2000, Leah Shrum; Ministry on the River, Ann Mills, coordinator of special projects located in Paducah, Ky.; Life Line Screening, Amanda Hite; Women's Prison Ministry, Pat Renner; and SEMO Music Academy, Hays Hendricks and several of her students.

Nancy Gillard presented Eye Spy where members had to identify pictures of items and people.

Festival of Sharing kits were received and dedicated by King. These kits were made by various churches and will be taken to the Mini Festival of Sharing to be held at the Dexter Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Meta Siemers announced that a CROP Walk will be held on Oct. 17 at North Cape County Park starting at 2 p.m. Seventy-five percent of the money raised will go to Church World Service and 25 percent will go to the FISH Pantry in Cape Girardeau.

Personal items were also received for the Salvation Army and Maj. Mary Thomas thanked the group for the items received.

High-Noon Toastmasters

The High-Noon Toastmasters Club met Sept. 28 with Dr. Russ Kullberg and Dr. Paul Lloyd as guest speakers. They are professors at Southeast Missouri State University. Kullberg provided scientific evidence that there is such a thing as global warming. Lloyd described how brain washing was used by the North Koreans during the Korean War.

Joan Masters led the group in table topics. This activity focuses on helping a person overcome initial inhibition in the communication process and becoming a better conversationalist.

Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met at the home of Charlotte Bess. The meeting was conducted by Linda Metheny, president.

Bernie Gardner, vice president, has been notified by Beta Sigma Phi International that Vicki McKinney is eligible for the master's degree and that Joyce Hays is eligible for the preceptor laureate degree.

Members discussed attending "The Nutcracker" performance on Nov. 18 at the Show Me Center.

Orders were taken for sweat shirts and T-shirts for the Beta Sigma Phi Missouri State Convention to be held in Cape Girardeau in 2005. It was reported that Carole Calvin, Judie Herbst, Bobbie Woodard, Metheny and Gardner will be attending the 2004 convention to be held in St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 22 through 24.

Norma Robinette from the Southeast Missouri State University Senior Learning Center was introduced by Charlotte Bess as guest speaker for the evening. She outlined the senior programs that are available for people 60 years of age and older, such as aquatic, computer, genealogy and more.

The next meeting will be at the home of Gardner.

Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met in the home of Renee Hesselrode on Sept. 21. Members of the chapter attended Tunes at Twilight on Sept. 7 at the Common Pleas Courthouse lawn in Cape Girar-deau.

The chapter discussed possible ways to help the hurricane victims in Florida as a service project. Also, the chapter will again participate in Operation Christmas Child.

A pledge ritual was held for Mary Stuart, who is joining the chapter.
