St. Mary Council of Catholic Women met Sept. 18 in the Huels Room.

The program was presented by representatives of the Cape Girardeau Fire Department. The many services offered by the fire department were explained including installation of smoke detectors and new batteries. Also, having carbon monoxide detectors was encouraged. There are four fire stations in the city, each having a special service in addition to the normal calls. If needed, backup is provided by the Jackson, Scott City and East Perry County departments and Cape Girardeau assists them.

Coverage of a large area of Southeast Missouri for special rescues requiring extensive training is another function of the department. An invitation was extended to bring children to tour Fire Station No. 1 on Sprigg Street. A gift card will be given to the fire department in appreciation.

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved.

Officers in attendance were Donna Simonton and Mary Buxton, co-presidents; Pat Eftink, treasurer; Imelda Nenninger, secretary; and Becky McLean, past president. Pat Steinkamp, vice president, was absent.

Eftink distributed copies of the treasurer's report for the month ending Sept. 18.

She read a thank-you note from the family of Gina Bisher for the bereavement dinner and a letter from Sister Lucille Zerr for her 60th jubilee celebration. She hopes to visit again this year.

Commission reports:

Diane Schaefer, leadership, distributed a list of retreat centers in Missouri. Information about the Adult Catholic Education programs was provided by Brenda Kuhn. One bereavement dinner was served. Hazel Blank attended Church Women United's Annual Awareness Luncheon. The program was on Child Abuse.

Becky McLean, Dolores Gibbar and Judy Stricker will chair the reception following the Rev. Allan Saunders' installation as pastor at the 10:30 a.m. Mass Oct. 12.

Workers are needed to register people for the picture directory. Encourage all members to have their pictures taken.

It was moved by Kate Schaefer and seconded by Diane Schaefer that a donation be given toward the building of a cabin at Camp Re-New-Al l in Fredericktown, Missouri. Motion carried.

Stricker moved that the council send a donation to National Council of Catholic Women for its annual giving appeal. Second by Buxton and motion carried.

Kate Schaefer and McLean moved that the council start meetings at 6:30 p.m. Motion carried with time change beginning with the next meeting Oct. 16.

The group will serve coffee and donuts after the 7 and 8:30 a.m. Masses Oct. 26 which is CCW Sunday.

Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution met Sept. 24 at Cape Girardeau Public Library. This was the first meeting after the summer break.

A program celebrating the observance of the writing of the National Anthem and the Battle of Fort McHenry preceded the business meeting. Ruth Lang presented a streaming-live Internet video, "The 200th Anniversary of the Star-Spangled Banner" which was sent to the chapter by the United States Daughters of 1812. Regent Charlotte Slinkard showed a replica of the 15-star flag that was flown during the bombardment of Fort McHenry and pictures of the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore, Maryland, where seamstress and flagmaker Mary Young Pickersgill lived during the War of 1812.

The NSDAR president general's September message to the chapters was read by the regent. Members were encouraged to enter their community service hours on the national website in the administration's Celebrate America Program. Members were also encouraged to subscribe to the DAR Magazine.

Reports were given by officers and chapter chairmen. Catherine Allison, registrar, reported on the status of new member applications in Washington, D.C.

Members attended the annual "Constitution and Heroes Assembly" at Alma Schrader Elementary School in Cape Girardeau Sept. 17. Edna Ruth Fisher expressed thanks to members Ruth Ann Orr and Julia Unnerstall for another excellent program.

Carolyn Webb, Ruth Lang and Sue LaBruyere reported on the Missouri State Society district meeting held Sept. 11 in Piedmont. Fall packet information and guidelines were distributed to officers and chairmen for the coming year. Janet McClanahan was introduced as a guest. A brief meeting of the executive board followed the meeting. The next regular meeting will be Oct. 22 at Cape River Heritage Museum.

Xi Nu Phi

Xi Nu Phi chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Sept. 9 at the home of Susan Benton, president.

City council minutes were read and discussed. A big thanks to Lambda Omicron for hosting an ice cream social for Beginning Day at Capaha Park.

Ideas were discussed from the social, service, membership, and scrapbook committees.

A report was heard giving details of plans for the state convention to be held in Cape Girardeau in October 2015.

A Halloween craft project was completed.
