Nancy Hunter NSDAR

The Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR met Sept. 22 in the Penzel Conference Room at Cape Girardeau Public Library as they resumed there meetings after a summer break. The new officers assumed their duties; they are: Sheila Holloway, regent; Ruth Lang, vice regent; Dorothy Points, chaplain; Catherine Allison, recording secretary; Helen Ruth Towns, corresponding secretary; LaFern Stiver, treasurer; Mary Lou Lett and Charlotte Slinkard, co-registrars; and Patsy Robert, librarian.

The group gave recognition to The Patriot Guard Riders on Aug. 22 at the VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau. Sheila Holloway headed up the ceremonies with speaker, Billy Pat Wright, Missouri state representative. Certificates were given to each of the riders.

The executive committee met Aug. 18 to plan the programs for the following year. They were Lang, Holloway, Towns and Allison.

On Sept. 15, John Guild Chapter DAR held the Southeast District meeting at St. Andrews Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau, with Nancy Hunter Chapter assisting by serving a continental breakfast. The chapter received a certificate for 2009-2010 Outstanding Achievement Award Level 2 at the district meeting.

The Nancy Hunter DAR ladies were invited to attend the Constitution Day Heroes Assembly held Sept. 16 at Alma Schrader Elementary School, hosted by chapter member, Julia Understall. It was announced that the school was selected to be the Character Educational Partnership, National Promising Practices award winners. The national contest sponsored by the American Eagle Association was won by the school. The prize was the naming of an Eaglet which they chose to name Mayflower.

Jeannine McGinnis gave the national defense report from information sent by a members grandson, 1st Lt. Christopher Allison who is serving in Afghanistan. The report told of 2010 being the deadliest year for NATO in the Afghan war with the worst helicopter crash killing nine people. This was from his unit which is the 101st out of Fort Campbell, Ky.

LaFerne Stiver gave the treasury report after all collections were made and expenses were paid. The minutes were read and both accepted and approved.

It was announced that Lang had given patriotic book markers to all the grade schools.

The next meeting will be held 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 18. It will be a genealogy workshop presented by Nancy Hunter Chapter and Marylyn Hutchings, reference librarian.
