Oak Ridge FCE
Jackie Retherford was hostess of the Oak Ridge FCE Club on Oct. 19. Marilyn Retherford gave the devotion "You are blessed."
Billie Criddle, treasurer, reported members' dues, proceeds from an auction and fair booth winnings had been received.
Discussion of the December County Council meeting was made and Lee Anderson, Carole Jo Byrd, Marilyn Retherford and Jackie Retherford will head the committees for the event. The Oak Ridge FCE will host the meeting. The noon meal will be a salad luncheon.
Nelda Crader reported receiving a $100 check and certificate for the Oak Ridge Club for a grant given by the Missouri FCE Foundation. This grant was for use with the Green Bear Project and was presented at the state conference in Columbia, Mo.
A thank you was received from the military mail family and a thank-you note was prepared for Sunny Hill Gardens for the use of their topiary for the SEMO District Fair booth.
The SEMO District meeting held recently in Wayne County was attended by Jean Rehak, Retherford, Crader and Anderson. Kim Begley had entered a doll in the Oh! You Beautiful Doll Contest which won the district competition. The winning doll will now be entered in competition with other district winners. Meb Floyd had made two other dolls for the child advocacy event.
Members are being asked to keep a record of books and magazines read through the end of the year for literacy reports.
Christmas greetings were prepared for members present for mailing in the military mail, also a part of the literacy projects.
Members who volunteered to attend Leaders' Training in Perry County on Nov. 5 are Ruby Hitt, Anderson and Rehak. Crader will be representing the Cape Girardeau County Council.
A candle-making program was given by Begley. She stressed the importance of fire safety.
A by-law change was made to elect new officers for the 2005 club year. Crader, Retherford and Criddle were elected to serve on the nominating committee.
Criddle, Crader and Byrd will be working at Jackson Manor on Tuesday. They will be serving refreshments and assisting residents with music and singing.
The November meeting will include a carry-in dinner with Betty Dellinger as hostess. It will be at the the lower banquet hall of the Elks Lodge in Jackson at 11 a.m.
Laureate Alpha Rho
The Laureate Alpha Rho Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Thursday at the home of Rosanna Whitnel. A business meeting was held.
Erma Vaughan, president, read an invitaton to the Exemplar Preceptor dinner to be held Nov. 18 at the Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge and hosted by Xi Mu Epsilon. An invitation was also read for a Benefit Tea to be held Dec. 5 for the Chromosome 18 Registry and Research Society in honor of Hunter Ross, son of a Beta Sigma Phi sister. Tea bags were passed out to members from the society. A motion was made and seconded for a donation to be made to the society.
Margaret Crites read a list of items needed by the Women's Safe House and all members were asked to bring one of these items to the next meeting to be donated to the Safe House.
It was reported that a 2005 convention meeting had been held on Oct. 18 and attended by Bonnie Hennessy, Mary Ann Nenninger and Whitnel. Shirts for the 2005 convention were passed out to those attending the 2004 convention in St. Louis Friday through Sunday and skits were rehearsed to be presented at this convention.
Bobbie Morris presented a program "Putting your priorities in order." The next meeting will be held Nov. 4 at the home of LaRue Brown.
