The New McKendree United Methodist Women met Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the church fellowship hall with 17 members and two guests present. The meeting was called to order by Mary Klaproth, president, followed by the unit reciting the UMW Purpose. Minutes from the previous meeting were read by Pam Buck, secretary, and approved as read. Minutes from the Mission Team meeting were read and approved as corrected. One piece of correspondence was read. Marilyn Fronabarger, treasurer, gave a treasurer's report of $3,381.22 local funds on hand.
Chairperson reports:
Program resources: Klaproth reported for Marcia Eggers, who sent new UMW books purchased for the club's library.
Spiritual growth: Julie Combs gave the devotional reading from an email she had received about "true joy."
Social action: Bonnie Blechle reported that the school kits and eyeglasses had been delivered to ShareFest and members will remember the World Thank Offering in October.
Education and interpretation: Shirley Patterson announced that Church Women United will celebrate World Community Day at Zion United Methodist Church in Gordonville on Nov. 4. She also lifted up an article in Response about "Women's Work."
Membership: Blechle asked members to keep her informed when cards need to be sent to members.
Ribbons: Elwanda Corbin had ribbons available for purchase.
Bereavement: Blechle reported two meals had been served.
Patterson, Klaproth and Corbin gave brief reports on the annual meeting they attended Sept. 23 and 24 in Kirksville, Missouri.
Eight members from the unit attended the Cape Girardeau County United Methodist Women meeting at Hobbs Chapel on Oct. 4.
Klaproth reported that she, Amanda Bond and several from the church youth group delivered the school kits and eyeglasses to ShareFest in Dexter, Missouri, on Oct. 1.
The Mary and Martha Circle won the attendance mission ribbon for the meeting. Also, two ribbons were presented to our guests, the Rev. and Mrs. Bill Minor.
The Wesleyan Circle decided they don't have enough members to continue as a circle and Klaproth suggested some of the Esther Circle members might be willing to join that circle. The Esther Circle will discuss it at its next meeting.
The mission team approved and proposed that the unit accept the new budget for 2017. Patterson made a motion the budget be accepted. Combs seconded. Motion passed.
The church choir asked the UMW if we would be willing to serve a chili/soup dinner after the Dec. 10 cantata. The mission team voted to bring this before the unit as well as holding a bake sale after the church fish fry in February. Combs made a motion the unit serve the meal after the cantata and have the bake sale in February. Sue Jones seconded the motion. Motion passed.
The next SEMO Food Bank workday will be Monday, Oct. 24.
Sue Jones from the nominating committee gave a report of a slate of officers for 2017. There were no new nominations from the floor. Combs made a motion this slate be accepted. Patty Maevers seconded. Motion passed.
The chairpersons of the bereavement committee are unable to serve next year and Klaproth had talked with someone about serving the meals for $1 per person. More discussion will take place at our next unit meeting.
Doris Dace expressed her concern about the serving spoons being locked up and made a motion that the spoons be put in the kitchen unlocked. Pam Buck seconded the motion. Motion passed.
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 and will be our memorial service.
Klaproth read a letter from Rev. David Israel reminding us that next Sunday's church offering will go to UMCOR for Haiti hurricane relief.
Dace read from the Charter for Racial Justice and Klaproth closed the meeting with a reading from the prayer calendar.
The program was presented by the Rev. Bill Minor on the history of the Bald Knob Cross of Peace at Alto Pass, Illinois.
Refreshments were served by the mission team.
The Town and Country club met on Oct. 13 at the home of Alene Hamilton.
The hostess read a devotion and presented a fairy tale trivia quiz to members. Paulette Johnston was welcomed as a guest. Roll call was given by Sue Jones and she also read the minutes from the previous meeting. The minutes were approved as read. Donna Woolsey gave the treasurer's report, which was approved as read. Pennies for Friendship were collected.
Mary Klaproth, president, proposed sending $25 to the Salvation Army to help fund their Thanksgiving dinner. A motion was made by Lois Seabaugh and seconded by Karen Murphy to send the money. The motion passed.
Klaproth reported under old business that bingo prizes were delivered on Sept. 13 to the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. A few club members then attended the SEMO District Fair together.
In honor of National Week of the Family, the club planted a Nandina shrub at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson on Sept. 26. Members attended Emmanuel United Church of Christ on Oct. 9. Guests attending church with the club were Gene King and Christopher Woolsey. Members went to lunch together after the worship service.
Klaproth reported that she, Darlene McCain and Jones attended the MAFCE Conference at Osage Beach, Missouri. A report on Thailand by Klaproth won a second-place ribbon at the conference.
The following announcements were made: The club will serve a Halloween party at Parkview State School at 1:45 p.m. on Oct. 31. Each member is to bring a treat. Prairie Farms will donate ice cream cups. Seabaugh is in charge of picking up the ice cream.
The club will deliver Halloween treat sacks to Cottonwood Treatment Center at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Weighted blanket work day will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26. Bring a covered dish if you plan to stay for lunch.
The fall district meeting was Tuesday in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Members attending the meeting were Alene Hamilton, McCain, Murphy and Woolsey.
Christmas cards were brought to the meeting to be sent to Military Mail. Jones is in charge of mailing the cards in November.
The program was given by Hamilton on fairy gardening. Club members brought a glass container and made their own fairy garden with supplies donated by Hamilton.
Club out will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at Beef O' Brady's in Cape Girardeau. The next meeting will be Nov. 10 at the home of Brenda Pender. The program will be on reverse mortgages. Members are to bring toys for the Jackson Police Department Toy Drive.
The Christmas party will be at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 8, at the home of Jones. Joyce King, Jones and Hamilton will be in charge of arrangements.
Plans are being made to erect Christmas displays at Jackson City Park and Cape County Park.
