Roberts Homemakers

The Roberts Homemakers Club met at Riverside Regional Library for their October meeting and Halloween party.

Following the carry-in meal, president Judy Bryant conducted a brief business meeting, where it was voted to donate $30 to the Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.

The November meeting will be held at Imperial Restaurant in Cape Girardeau. Election of officers will be held. Each member is to bring two items for the food pantry.

Southeast Missouri FCE

The Southeast Missouri District fall meeting of the Family and Community Education Association was held Oct. 8 in Longtown, Mo. The theme of the day was "Destressing with FCE."

Approximately 64 members from seven Southeast counties attended. Marilyn Edwards, Southeast FCE director, presided. Betty Schalk, MAFCE state president, also attended.

Kathy Schlimpert presented a "Scherenschnitte" demonstration. This is an art of scissors' cuttings, which had its beginning in China. Later German and Austrian artists adopted the craft. Delicate filigrees of carefully cut paper depicts various scenes.

A program titled "Laughter: The Recipe for a Better Life" was presented by Judy Lueders, Perry County nutrition specialist. The luncheon was prepared by Perry County FCE.

The afternoon entertainment was a violin concert by Michelle Suhr, a violin instructor at Southeast Missouri State University.

The fourth-grade art and essay contest this year is on "Trustworthiness," which is one of the pillars of Character Counts.

Leaders Training will be held Nov. 7, at Altenburg, Mo. Training will consist of the following topics: bath salts, low maintenance landscaping, creating a healthier home and meetings with a flair.

An auction was conducted by Betty Murdock, state secretary of MAFCE. Door prizes were awarded by Cape County FCE.

American Legion Auxiliary

The American Legion Auxiliary met Oct. 8 at the home of John and Barb Yallaly. A covered dish meal was served at noon. Minutes of the September meeting were read and approved. Correspondence included three thank-you notes from Dorothy Scowden, Gladys Lawrence and Eleonora Brewton.

A letter was read from Megan Kistner thanking the auxiliary for sending her to Missouri Girls' State in June. Other girls who attended were Sarah Michel, Rachel Morse, Rachel Ruopp and Megan Freeze. Thank-you notes were also received from Community Counseling Center Foundation for a recent donation and from Jefferson Elementary School for school supplies.

An invitation to attend Cape Girardeau Central High School's Tribute to Veterans at 9:30 a.m. Nov. 11 at Tiger Field House was received.

Volunteers are needed to work in various capacities at The Salvation Army. Sign-up sheets were circulated.

Marilyn Ritter, education chairman, has taken several scholarship applications to the various schools. In recognition of National Teachers' Month, she will purchase and deliver apples to Notre Dame Regional High School. Chips and soda will be taken by Myrna Powers to the Alternative School for Make a Difference Day. Barb Yallaly will take Halloween treats to Jefferson Elementary School "Just Say No to Drugs."

Upcoming events include the 14th District Meeting on Nov. 9 at Poplar Bluff, Mo. Carpooling members are to meet at noon at Town Plaza in Cape Girardeau.

Iola Amelunke, Powers and Yallaly will be attending the Fall Conference, Oct. 31 to Nov. 2, in Jefferson City, Mo.

Ronald McDonald Tab Tops program will be an ongoing project. Approximately 15 pounds have been taken to McDonald's Restaurant plus 35 pounds in the summer.

The next three years all American Legion Auxiliary members of Missouri will be raising funds for JoAnn Cronin of Imperial, Mo., who will be installed as national president at the national convention in the year 2006.

Laureate Alpha Rho

The Laureate Alpha Rho chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met on Oct. 16 at the home of Rosanna Whitnel.

A business meeting was held after a meal of grilled hamburgers and a brief message from the international was read by Erma Vaughan. It was announced that the Preferential Tea was to be held Oct. 21 at Tracy's Place in Jackson. Hosting duties fell to Omega Tau.

It was moved and seconded that a donation would be made by the chapter to the Salvation Army as a Thanksgiving service. A decision was made for each member to bring 12 Christmas cards to send to the members of our Armed Forces overseas.

The next meeting will be hosted by Margaret Crites on Nov. 6.

Wonderworkers FCE

The September meeting of the Wonderworkers FCE was held at the home of Nell Starzinger. Plans were made to attend the District meeting in Longtown on Nov. 7.

The program was led by Starzinger on quilt tricks and new ways to piece quilts.

Officers were elected: June Landgraf, president; Nelda Starzinger, vice president; Margie W. Reisenbichler, secretary-treasurer; and Margie E. Reisenbichler, reporter.

The club met on Oct. 9 at RED Barn on U.S. 61 north with Landgraf as hostess. Plans were made to meet Oct. 29 at Margie E. Reisenbichler's home to make popcorn balls for Halloween treats for VIP in Fruitland.

Plans were made for the training meeting on Nov. 7, to be held in Altenburg.

Fritsche gave a program titled "Honey -- All the uses of honey and facts about it."

It was decided to make posters for FCE week and put them in various businesses.

Cape West Rotary

Cape West Rotary will not hold meetings on Nov. 27, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1, 2004, due to the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's holidays.

The club meets every Thursday at noon at Cape Girardeau Elks Lodge.
