John Guild NSDAR

The John Guild Chapter, National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution celebrated Constitution Week at their September meeting held above the Jackson City Library.

Patsy Johnson was presented two certificates for her portrayal of British General John Burgoyne at the battles of Saratoga which were a turning point in the Revolutionary War. She portrayed the general during Constitution Week 2011. The certificates were presented to the chapter at the 2012 Continental Congress held in Washington, D.C. The chapter also received a Level 1, Outstanding for the event held Sept. 11, 2011. All of the awards won first at the state level and then first at the South Central Division and then first at the national level.

Hostesses for the event were Cheryl Cook and Marti Strickland.

Nancy Hunter Chapter NSDAR

Charlotte Slinkard called the Sept. 26 meeting to order.

Guests in attendance were Carol Cannon, Jerry Kenner, and Sharon Williams.

The meeting was recessed for the day's program which was the Restoration of the Lay Light in the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. Money was collected and donated to the project. The group also watched scenes from Constitution Week and Heroes Assembly at Alma Schrader School. This was attended by several members. Members Julia Unnerstall and Ruth Ann Orr organized the event.

The meeting was reconvened for the National Defense Report by Mick Stiver who stressed the necessity of a strong military for effective national defense. She also encouraged members to vote.

The minutes from the last meeting were approved. Ruth Lang gave the treasurer's report.

Catherine Allison, registrar, reported the chapter has 45 members, three associate members, and three applications pending in Washington.

The regent's report was given by Charlotte Slinkard. She remarked that it was an honor to serve as Regent of the Nancy Hunter Chapter.

The Executive Board met on Aug. 21 and LaFern "Mick" Stiver was appointed to ll the vacant librarian position. Also programs were nalized for the year.

The chapter now has 23 email addresses for the yearbook.

Dr. Frank Nickell will be the speaker at the November meeting.

For the March meeting plans are to honor Marie Watkins Oliver and the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the Missouri State Flag.

Lang and Slinkard attended the district meeting in Poplar Bluff, Mo. The chapter received an award for increase in membership.

At the 121st Continental Congress, NSDAR adopted the following resolution: "Restore instruction in Cursive Handwriting." There were also major changes in the master questionnaire.

Stiver, librarian, reported that the book "Braintree, Massachusetts and its history" by Holly H. Hobart was donated to the Cape Girardeau Public Library by the chapter.

Sue LaBruyere reported that the chapter is collecting Campbell Soup labels to donate to Tamassee DAR School in South Carolina. Also Christmas goodie bags are to be sent to students (grades 4-8) living in Missouri Groves Cottage.

Unnished business includes a small ad that is now ready and will be sent to Missouri State Magazine in honor of Dorothy Point's 50-year membership in DAR.

New business: Members are urged to subscribe to the DAR Magazine for $18/year. A handout for ordering Insignia was distributed. Members were encouraged to sign up for the Missouri DAR Online Newsletter. Ideas for chapter fundraisers were discussed. Possible chapter projects were discussed.

The program for the next meeting on Oct. 24 will be a slide presentation by Ken Steinhoff entitled "Fifty years of looking through a lens."

Xi Nu Phi

The Xi Nu Phi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Oct. 2 at the home of Renee Hesselrode. It was announced that Tammy Monia and Sheryl Smith are eligible to receive the Laureate Degree which will take place at the Exemplar Preceptor Banquet in November.

Information was given about Vintage Pins that are available for purchase from International.

Discussion was held about the rush that will be held at the Dec. 4 meeting.

Monia gave a convention report. The convention will be held in 2015 in Cape Girardeau.

Hesselrode presented the program on cookbooks from the past.

The next meeting will be Oct. 16 at the home of Susan Benton.
