Torchbearer Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi

The Torchbearer Iota Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi met Jan. 12 at the home of Marilyn Schwab, with Linda Belote as co-hostess. President Linda Belote conducted the meeting.

It was reported that items for the chapter's "Operation Komando" project have been sent to military personnel. Additional items will be collected all year.

Bernie Gardner reported on the recent Beta Sigma Phi City Council and 2015 BSP Convention meetings concerning the chapter's responsibilities for the convention. The next convention meeting will be at 6 p.m. Feb. 4 at Simply Swirled.

Plans were discussed for the "Mary Poppins" movie/pizza night that had been set for January at the home of Gardner. The date has been changed to February and will be combined with the chapter Valentine gift exchange.

Carole Calvin read "The Golden Circle" from the Book of Beta Sigma Phi. Several members will be eligible for this honor in three or four years.

Gwen Nussbaum will be given the master's degree at the Feb. 23 meeting.

A vote was taken for the chapter Valentine queen. She will be honored at the all-chapter Valentine brunch to be held at 10 a.m. Feb. 14 at Cape Girardeau Country Club. The RSVP date for this event is Feb. 4.

The program for the evening, "Dressing For Spring" and "Words of Wisdom" including "Don't Break the Elastic" by Maya Angelou, was presented by Mary Schwab.

The next meeting will be at the home of Charlotte Bess.

Following the meeting Dixie Jones conducted pledge training for new member Carole Rhodes. Members participated as a refresher course. Jones also read an article obtained from Beta Sigma Phi International, "The Meaning of Sisterhood."

American Legion Auxiliary

The January meeting of American Legion Auxiliary began with a breakfast buffet by hostesses Colleen Gabriel and Muriel Day. Twenty members were in attendance.

Barbara Yallaly, president, encouraged everyone to continue to bring items for the Amen Center. Paper products, tooth brushes, etc., are needed.

Military banners are available to members having family members serving in the armed forces.

Minutes of the December meeting were accepted as presented as was the treasurer's report.

Jane Grojean, Girls State chairman, rendered her resignation and recommended we no longer support this program due to lack of participation by the selected girls. Reba Strayhorn made the second and passed. If a young girl wants to attend Girls State in the future we will assist her in anyway possible.

Members voted to send $100 per month to Operation Comforting Warriors. This is a program recommended by the American Legion.

Linda Kern asked members to bring tissues and hand sanitzers for Jefferson Elementary School rather than gloves, etc.

The next meeting is Feb. 11. The district meeting will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 8 at the post home.

Lamplighters FCE Club

The FCE Lamplighters Club held its first meeting of 2015 at First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge Jan. 15.

The meeting was called to order by JoAnn Hahs, president. The club collect was read, the devotion was given by JoAnn Hahs, and Roberta Allen led the group in a song.

Dorothy Hahs read the December minutes, Linda Sebaugh gave the treasurer's report, and both were approved.

Hahs read the by-laws and discussed the new program books.

Autism Sew Day is at 9 p.m. Feb. 4 at the University of Missouri Extension Center in Jackson. Back-up date is Feb. 11.

This year marks the Lamplighter's golden anniversary and plans were discussed as how to celebrate during the year.

The program, "Immunizations," was presented by Hahs.

The next meeting is Feb. 26, which will kickoff the 50th year anniversary celebration. Members and guests will meet at Grecian Steak House for supper and then attend "The King and I" at Southeast Missouri State University River Campus.
