Beginning today, representatives of the Cape Girardeau fire and police departments will be distributing information packets to flood victims who are returning or who will soon return to their homes.
Bettie Knoll, a special officer with the police department who has been checking on residents within the flood zones for the past few weeks, will distribute the packets with three firefighters. The group will answer any questions flood victims might have or refer them to an agency that could help.
The packets include information regarding:
The first steps homeowners need to take after floodwaters recede to make their homes livable again.
Water quality and how to disinfect water faucets, pipes and other outlets.
How to get hold of the city inspection services and what will be required to pass inspection.
Tips from the Missouri attorney general to make residents aware of the potential for fraud.
The health and safety of flood victims and their children during cleanup.
The removal of debris and sandbags from homes within the flood zone.
Also included in the packets will be information, pens and note pads and other items from both area hospitals.
Knoll and the firefighters will hand-deliver the information to people who are home and hang bags on the doors of those who have moved or are away for the day.
If you do not receive a packet but would like one, stop by Fire Station No. 1 at the corner of Sprigg and Independence streets.
