The city of Cape Girardeau recently received the 1998 Missouri Waste Control Coalition's Outstanding Achievement Award for its curbside recycling program.
The city was nominated for the award by Gary L. Gaines, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Southeast Regional Office.
By the end of the 1996-97 fiscal year, which ended June 30, 1997, Cape Girardeau residents had diverted 41 percent of the waste materials from the waste stream into the recycling program.
The statewide goal set by the Missouri Legislature for waste reduction is 40 percent, to be reached by January 1998.
"It's great that the community is being recognized for their recycling efforts with this statewide award," said Doug Leslie, the city's Public Works director. Leslie accepted the award.
