The Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department closed a muddy section of the city’s dog park Thursday for needed maintenance.
Brock Davis, parks division manager, said the recent rains have made a mess of the entrance to the large-dog section of the park. Dogs have worn out that area of ground, he said.
As a result, pets and their owners are muddied when they visit the park, Davis said.
Parks and recreation plans to dig out the dirt and replace it with chat and rock, he said.
The work is expected to take three to five days, weather permitting.
Davis said the large-dog section could reopen next week.
The small-dog section will not be affected by the project and will remain open, he said.
Located at Kiwanis Park, Dogtown is a fenced area of about one acre with separate areas for small and large dogs. Each area has several amenities such as a tunnel, dog water fountain, fire hydrant, picnic tables and waste disposal containers.
The city created the park with funding from casino revenue.
