Jamie Filer, a senior at Cape Girardeau Central High School, won the district Voice of Democracy contest, sponsored by the VFW.
As district winner, she received a $100 savings bond and another $100 cash award. She also received an expense paid trip to Columbia to compete in the state contest.
Filer said she learned about the contest from a scholarship magazine she read at school and decided to enter.
She wrote a five-minute speech on "My Commitment to America," which she then recited onto an audio tape.
Filer is a member of CASA, a drug awareness group for elementary schools, earned I ratings for solo performances at district and state music contests, attended Camp Enterprise and participates in the CHS orchestra.
She was also named Student of the Month for February by the Cape Girardeau Elks club.
She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Burnett of Cape Girardeau.
