The Southeast Missouri State University Choral Union will begin its spring rehearsal schedule Tuesday, Jan. 14.

The Choral Union is open to community and church choir singers, as well as all university students, faculty and staff.

John B. Egbert, coordinator of choral and vocal studies at the university, is director of the group.

This semester, the combined memberships of the Choral Union and University Choir will present Handel's "Dettinger Te Deum," an 18th Century masterpiece.

Handel was chosen as the official musical spokesman on the occasion of the English military victory at Dettinger in 1743. Scored for chorus and orchestra, the Te Deum also employs soprano, alto, tenor and bass soloists.

Egbert said: "We have been so delighted with the results of these combined musical ventures Choral Union, University Choir and University Orchestra. People occasionally lament the lack of cultural opportunities in Southeast Missouri, but this has proven to be a wonderful musical experience for all.

"Naturally, I would like to see an increase in participation from our community. Those who have joined us have thoroughly enjoyed the experience," he said. "Many community singers are not aware that they can simply come to the university on Tuesday evenings and sing in this group; they do not have to enroll in anything, pay any fees or tuition."

Rehearsals are held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Brandt Music Hall. Music is provided.

For more information, call Egbert at 651-2342, the Music Office at 651-2141, or attend a Tuesday rehearsal.
