CHICAGO -- A Chicago-area resident is the first person in Illinois to die of swine flu.

Illinois Department of Public Health director, Dr. Damon Arnold, said Monday that the victim had underlying medical conditions.

Arnold said the victim's family has requested privacy and no more information about the death would be released.

There have been 896 confirmed cases of swine flu in Illinois, mostly mild. The virus has been blamed for a number of deaths in the U.S.
