CHARLESTON, Mo. -- One young man is dead after an apparent homicide in Charleston, according to a news release from the Charleston Department of Public Safety.

The release said police received reports of gunshots in the area of Locust and Ada streets about 9:30 p.m. Friday. A short time later, it was reported a person had been shot at 906 S. Locust St., according to the news release.

Officers found Jajhirien Caldwell, 18, of Charleston behind the residence with an apparent gunshot wound. An officer administered CPR until an ambulance arrived, and Caldwell was pronounced dead after being taken to an area hospital for treatment. An autopsy has been ordered by the Mississippi County Coroner, the news release said.

A second gunshot victim, Cornelius David, 24, also of Charleston, sought treatment at an area hospital and was released. The news release said he is not cooperating with the investigation.

There are no suspects in custody, according to the news release.

The news release said anyone with information regarding the shooting is urged to contact the Charleston Department of Public Safety at 573-683-3737.
