A shopping event last month at West Park Mall raised $26,200 for 81 area charities.

More than 4,800 guests attended the first Westfield Works Wonders fund-raising event.

"Area non-profit groups, both large and small, were invited to register to receive tickets," explained Jim Govro, mall manager. "In turn, members would ask for a $5 donation per ticket with 100 percent of the proceeds retained by the organization who sold them."

Tickets admitted guests to an after-hours evening of shopping and special events.

As an additional incentive to participating charities, West Park Mall offered cash bonuses to the top three groups selling the most tickets.

Clippard Elementary Choir earned first-place honors and a $300 cash donation by selling 550 tickets.

Vocational Industrial Clubs of America at the Cape Girardeau Area Vocational-Technical School placed second and the Alma Schrader sixth-grade DC Group placed third.
