BENTON, Mo. -- An argument between a couple escalated into assault and eventually, a man's arrest.

Jesse S. Brown, 38, of Chaffee, Missouri, was charged with felony domestic assault after an incident that began late Sunday.

According to Scott County Sheriff Rick Walter, at approximately 12:05 a.m. Monday, deputy John Caudle was called to a residence on Route A in Scott County. A woman, identified as Brown's girlfriend, told the officer she and Brown were traveling in a vehicle on Route A when an argument began over Brown texting other women.

The victim stated Brown drove through a ditch and stopped the vehicle in a field. When she attempted to walk away from the vehicle, stating she was calling the police, "the victim reported that Brown grabbed her by the shoulders, shook her and cursed her," Walter said in a news release. "She got free and again attempted to walk away. She stated at this point Brown threw her on the ground."

The woman was able to run to a residence, where she was allowed to call 911.

At the scene, Caudle observed the victim had a swollen right elbow and mud on her clothing, Walter reported. She was taken by ambulance to Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for treatment.

The deputy located Brown sitting in the vehicle. Brown denied assaulting the woman and told the deputy she was lying. Brown was then taken into custody.

Brown remains in custody at the Scott County Jail. Bond was set by the court at $2,500 cash or surety.
