Chandelier back in place at Mo. Capitol

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- A large brass chandelier is back in place at the Missouri Capitol, one year after it fell during maintenance.

Workers had lowered the chandelier for maintenance when it slipped the remaining few feet and crashed to the floor of the Capitol Rotunda on Nov. 10, 2006.

The chandelier was taken apart and shipped to St. Louis for repairs. In the process, it also was improved with better lights and a shiny new finish.

The chandelier cost $5,000 when it was new in 1918. The repairs and refurbishment cost about $500,000. The cost was paid by private insurance.

Missouri officials say the 8,000-pound light fixture is the largest capitol chandelier in the nation.
