Carl E. Hurley, a former educator who left a professorship at Eastern Kentucky University to become a full-time speaker and entertainer, will be featured speaker at the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce Industrial Appreciation Dinner, to be held Oct. 7 at the Show Me Center.

The dinner is designed to honor area industries, with the highlight event of the evening the presentation of the Commitment to Excellence Award honoring the 1993 industry of the year.

This year's event marks the fifth year for the dinner. Concord Publishing House Inc. was last year's industry of the year. Previous winners were Biokyowa in 1991, Procter and Gamble in 1990, Lone Star Industries in 1989, and General Sign Co. in 1988.

More than 900 people attended the 1992 dinner. Tickets for the 1993 event are now available at $20 each. Tables of eight may be reserved with company name for $160 per table.

Hurley, a native of the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky, has a bachelor of science and a master's degree in industrial education from Eastern Kentucky University. He also has a doctorate in education from the University of Missouri.

Hurley, often referred to as "America's Funniest Professor," now makes his home at Lexington. He served as an educator a number of years at Eastern Kentucky, and coordinated the university's secondary education program before leaving to become an entertainer.

Planned in conjunction with the industrial dinner is the annual Industrial Appreciation Golf Tournament to be held Oct. 4, at the Cape Girardeau Country Club. A total of 108 golfers participated in last year's tournament. The entry fee is $50 per person for the four-person scramble. Entries must be in by Sept. 27

The Industrial Fair will not be held this year. "The fair will be held every other year," said a Chamber spokesperson. "We held it last year, and it will be held again in 1995."

The fair event provides an opportunity for area firms to exhibit information about products and capabilities of local industries. It was held last year at West Park Mall.

Members of the chamber are also urged to attend grand opening festivities at the Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport Terminal building Oct. 2.

A formal dedication ceremony will be held to dedicate the newly renovated facility at 3 p.m. Festivities will continue to 5 p.m. Displays will include antique aircraft, experimental aircraft and Missouri Air National Guard crafts. Local pilots and pilot club members will also be present with their aircraft.
