The Cape Girardeau County's prosecuting attorney's office charged a Chaffee, Missouri, woman with felony theft for allegedly receiving food-stamp benefits improperly.

Stephanie Nicole Cerney, 37, was issued a summons Tuesday to appear in Cape Girardeau County Court in Jackson at 1 p.m. Sept. 26.

From September 2013 through September 2015, Cerney said her son was a household member on food-stamp applications, but her son was living in Louisiana, according to a probable-cause statement filed by Missouri Department of Social Services Investigations manager Mark Winchester.

Cerney received $3,789 because of the misrepresentation, Winchester wrote.
