CHAFFEE - The Chaffee City Council has voted to waive the payment of the city's franchise tax on electricity by the Scott County R-2 School District.

Council members approved the action at their Monday evening meeting. The action came after City Attorney David Summers said no statutes limited the council from taking such action.

School district officials attended the council's last regular meeting on March 4 to ask that the district be exempted from paying the tax, which is collected by Union Electric and then paid back to the city. Other taxing entities, the district had noted, usually don't tax each other.

The school district paid about $1,930 last year for the tax, said Ron Moyers, Chaffee's mayor.

Ward 3 Councilman Randy Dooley said similar waiver requests would be handled on a case-by-case basis.
