Chaffee schools kick off academic year with fully staffed faculty

The academic year at Chaffee schools began on a positive note, according to district superintendent Shawn Nix. He said it was marked by a fully staffed faculty and a welcoming atmosphere.

The district has introduced new security measures and student support systems, hoping to enhance students' experiences this year.

Chaffee has implemented new security cameras throughout the district, funded by the federal E-Rate grant. This addition, along with the entering vestibules at both school buildings is helping ensure the safety of the students and workers inside the building.

Nix also said the district has a close relationship with local law enforcement during sports and other events, with the school resource officer playing a crucial role in maintaining safety daily in the building.

"We're very fortunate that we work very well with the city of Chaffee and Scott County," Nix said. "If we need those things, they are always willing to provide them."

The start of the school year has been particularly successful for pre-K and kindergarten students, who are navigating the elementary building with ease, Nix said.

Nix also said teachers are well-prepared and ready for the new academic year and the challenges it will bring.

“Everybody has come in and seemed excited about school. I've been in both buildings. I've got to be at the elementary most mornings this week, and it's nice to see those little ones come in with their big smiles and excitement,” Nix said

The student council's buddy system at the high school has been a great asset in helping new and junior high students find their way into the building. Student council members wore red vests for easy identification and assisted students in various areas, including in the lunchroom.

"I like it just because I know that they're there to help anybody that they see that may need a little extra lift," Nix said. “Junior high students or students who are brand new to the building, it can be a little daunting, and so they're just there to lend that extra support and be a familiar face.”

Like many schools in the area, Chaffee has adopted a strict phone policy to minimize distractions, allowing phone use only in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch.

Nix has high hopes for a positive and productive school year. His overall focus is on equipping students with the skills needed for various post-graduation paths, including college, workforce, military and vocational training.

"I want them to gain the knowledge they need and feel like they have the skills and means necessary to be successful when they leave the building," Nix said.
