CHAFFEE -- Smoking is out at Chaffee public schools as of July 1.
The district's school board, by a 4-to-1 vote, banned smoking in the district's buildings at its regular Thursday night meeting.
"That doesn't mean campus; that just means within the buildings," said district Superintendent Wayne Pressley.
Pressley said the policy will allow patrons to smoke on the district campus. But, he said, "Students are still not allowed to smoke anywhere on campus."
The district's administration recommended last month that the board consider the banning of smoking in district buildings as of the start of the new district year on July 1. Pressley said visitors, staff members and district patrons had requested that such a policy be considered.
The lone board member who voted against the proposal was Bob Sullivan, said Pressley. Pressley said Sullivan did not say why he opposed the measure. Sullivan could not be reached.
Board member Jim Chronister did not attend the meeting because of a death in the family, said Pressley.
