CHAFFEE -- The Chaffee Nutrition Center is celebrating its 20-year anniversary throughout the month of October. A special meal is planned for Thursday at 11:30 a.m. that is open to the public. On opening day, eight volunteers cooked, fed and cleaned up after the 95 patrons who visited the center....

A special meal is planned for Thursday at 11:30 a.m. that is open to the public. Door prizes will be awarded.

The center first opened Oct. 1, 1973, through the efforts of James A. Chronister and the Chaffee Rotary Club. On opening day, eight volunteers cooked, fed and cleaned up after the 95 patrons who visited the center..

Four of the original volunteers continue to frequent the center, working, quilting or playing bingo.

The donation for the first meal at the center was 75 cents. Today, meals can be purchased for $1.50.

The nutrition center currently has four full-time employees and 13 volunteers. It services the north Scott County area.

All seniors 60 years of age and older are invited to visit the center for the noon meal daily and to partake in the activities.

The Chaffee Nutrition Center is partially funded by the Area Agency on Aging and local donations. The Center Fund raises approximately $9,000 annually to meet its budget.
