A 19-year-old arrested Jan. 19 for allegedly selling a controlled substance in the parking lot of the Scott City Public School was attempting to sell Xanax, according to a probable-cause affidavit from the Scott County prosecutor's office.

Keith R. Totty of Chaffee, Mo., sold an undercover police officer 10 small blue pills sealed in a clear plastic bag at around 10:30 a.m. Jan. 15, according to the affidavit. He's charged with felony distributing a controlled substance within 2,000 feet of a school.

Once the pills were entered as evidence, they were identified as Xanax tablets, a controlled substance, according to the affidavit.

While Xanax is commonly used for the management of anxiety disorders, it is sometimes used recreationally to amplify the effects of marijuana or heroin.

In the probable cause statement, police officer Wayne Hampton said four days after the initial sale it was arranged for the undercover officer and Totty to meet for another sale. Several officers and the Southeast Missouri Drug Task Force met Totty in the parking of Burger King, 2608 Main St., and arrested him for the Jan. 15 sale on school property.
