Each Cape Girardeau public school has an Adopt-a-School business partner except Central High School. The high school has been orphaned for several years.

The Adopt-a-School program, established in 1985, in Cape Girardeau schools has become a part of the educational program.

The program is coordinated by each school and the local businesses. School officials say the Adopt-a-School arrangement provides a channel for better communication. Teachers and students learn what businesses need and expect from employees; businesses learn what is happening in the classroom.

In addition, business partners provide speakers, programs, special activities and treats for students and staff. In turn, students present programs, art work and treats for their partners.

Central Junior High School is adopted by St. Francis Medical Center.
