A member of the faculty of the University of MissouriKansas City Conservatory will present a guest cellist recital tonight.
Robert Battey will present the concert at 7:30 p.m. in Old St. Vincent's Church in Cape Girardeau. The event is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Southeast Missouri State University music department.
Battey will perform three of the six "Suites for Solo Cello" by Johann Sebastian Bach. The suites were written during Bach's tenure as Kappellmeister to Prince Leopold at Cothen from 1717 to 1723. Each suite consists of six movements, beginning with a free, improvisatory prelude, and continuing with five further dance movements.
The three suites will range in mood from an introspective, brooding darkness to sunny exuberance.
Battey is in his 12th year at the University of MissouriKansas City Conservatory. He was a member of the Volker String Quartet and the Contemporary Chamber Players, and spent several seasons as associate principal cellist of the Kansas City Symphony. He has given concerts throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico, and has performed on television and radio.
