The CBS College Tour will offer students a variety of television-related entertainment events today and Tuesday on the Southeast Missouri State University campus.
Southeast has been selected for a full-scale dress rehearsal of the nationwide tour, which will visit 50 colleges and universities between late August and early May.
The College Tour features eight events, centered around CBS daytime, prime-time and sports program themes.
Organizers said the tour was initially tested last year, with an event tied to "The Young and the Restless," a CBS soap opera.
Jim Byrne of the network's marketing office in New York said the expansion of the tour reflects both its popularity with students and its effectiveness as a marketing tool.
"College students are an increasingly influential segment of the consumer market, with an average annual personal buying power of $5,819," said Byrne. "They also are avid television viewers."
College students watch an average of 13 hours of television a week, Byrne said.
The tour events will be held in four 600-square-foot tents, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Academic Terraces on the Southeast campus.
The events include:
"It's Your Call." Students will view tapes of sports plays as covered by CBS Sports broadcasters and tape their own version of the play-by-play, receiving a free videotape of their call. The setting will be a simulated press box broadcast booth.
"Coming Attractions." Students will view excerpts of upcoming Columbia/Tri-Star Pictures releases, star profiles and behind-the-scenes vignettes. Continuous 10-minute screenings will be held in a 15-seat mini-theater, complete with a concession stand.
"Family Feud on Campus." Teams of students will compete for prizes in a campus version of the popular daytime game show. The competition will be held on a scaled-down version of the "Family Feud" set.
"Studio CBS." Students will perform actual scenes from "The Young and the Restless," as well as "As the World Turns, "Bold and Beautiful," and "Guiding Light." Students will receive free videotapes of their performances.
"Comedy Quiz." Students will compete for prizes by guessing the punch line in scenes from situation comedies, including "Designing Women," "Evening Shade," "Major Dad," and "Murphy Brown," and new shows premiering this fall.
"Shoot Out." Students will shoot baskets against the clock in a variation of the "Around the World" basketball game. The event will feature a scaled-down basketball court and will use miniature basketballs.
"The Price is Right on Campus." Students will compete for prizes by playing the campus version of the TV game show.
"Weather Station." Students will be videotaped delivering simulated weather forecasts with KFVS-TV weatherman Don McNeely, and will receive free tapes of their performances.
