A single-wide mobile home at 130 Parkwood Lake St. in Cape Girardeau County was severely damaged by a fire early Thursday morning.

The Gordonville Fire Protection District handled the blaze with help from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department. Firefighters were called to the scene just before 7 a.m.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, but it was not considered suspicious, said Justin Siemers, Gordonville battalion chief. Siemers said the mobile home was a total loss.

Randy Morris, chief of the Gordonville Fire Protection District, said the area of origin for the blaze was the trailer's rear bedroom.

Siemers said it took about 10 minutes to get the fire contained, but firefighters were on scene for at least an hour. Firefighters declined to identify the home's occupants, but Brenda Thiele said her daughter, Michelle Thiele, had lived in the mobile home for five or six years and has two children, Dylan, 14, and Mya, 3. Brenda Thiele has lived in the home across from her daughter since 2000.

She said everyone was asleep when the fire started. "They just woke up to flames," Brenda Thiele said.

Michelle Thiele sustained minor burns to her hands, but had no other injuries. The children were unhurt.

Neighbor Jami Ruebel said she was driving on Route K on her way home from work when she saw smoke. After she pulled up to the park entrance, Ruebel said Michelle Thiele told her to call 911.

"We're all like one big family out here. They'll be taken care of," Ruebel said.
