JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The World Series trophy traveled to the state Capitol on Thursday as lawmakers honored the St. Louis Cardinals for their baseball championship.
The House and Senate both passed resolutions Thursday congratulating the Cardinals on their World Series victory over the Detroit Tigers last fall.
In the Senate, Cardinals president Mark Lamping stood proudly holding the 30-pound, 2-foot-tall sterling silver and gold trophy as the entire congratulatory resolution was read aloud. In the House, Lamping spoke briefly from the dais and thanked lawmakers for their support in spite of the conflicting team loyalties across Missouri.
"It was wonderful we could set aside our differences at times and celebrate together," Lamping said.
After lawmakers got a look, the trophy was put on display for the day in the Capitol Rotunda. A fairly steady stream of visitors posed to have their pictures taken next to it.
The Cardinals also were honored at a White House ceremony last month. Guests there included most of the state's congressional delegation, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder and former Missouri Gov. John Ashcroft.
