Audiophiles unite!
An event called "Quiver by the River," which attempts to find the best car audio systems from competitors in five states, will take place Sunday at Stereo One, 345 S. Kingshighway.
Competition is sanctioned by the International Auto Sound Challenge Association and will begin at 11 a.m. The goal is not to have the loudest car stereo, but the best-sounding.
Classes will include Novice, which is for first-time car audio competitors; Amateur, for experienced competitors; and Pro, which is for dealer and manufacturer-owned vehicles.
Power classes will be divided into 0-100 watts, 101-250 watts, 251-500 watts, 501-1000 watts and 1000+ watts.
First, second and third place trophies will be awarded for each class. The "Best of Show" winner will earn a trophy and $100.
Judging criteria will include both objective and subjective areas. Sound and installation quality, creativity, and acoustic measurements will affect overall scores. System loudness is a very small factor in judging.
Scheduled events include "Scream for MDA," which is a fund-raiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Competitors will vie for a $50 gift certificate from Stereo One.
In a different type of contest, for a $1 donation, competitors will see who can scream the loudest into a special microphone connected to a Sound Pressure Level Meter. The loudest screamer earns a $50 gift certificate.
Cut-off for registration will be at exactly 1 p.m. on Sunday. Competitors can preregister now.
All competitors will receive a "Quiver by the River, Fry in July" T-shirt and free food from Spanky's Texaco Super Store, which is next door to Stereo One.
Also, judges of a special Unlimited Sound Pressure Level contest "Master Blaster" will award $100 to the winner.
