Published March 29, 1988. "Transportation on the River" was the theme of the 85-foot long, 10-foot high mural that Jackson artist Craig Thomas painted on the walls of Washington School in Cape Girardeau. The mural, which was a view of Cape Girardeau including several boats on the Mississippi and the river bridge, was funded through the elementary school's PTA and Centerre Bank, Washington School's Adopt-A-School partner. Missouri Secretary of State Roy Blunt visited students at Washington Elementary School in Cape Girardeau to discuss the history of the state flag and to get support from school children in raising funds to restore the original state flag. The original flag, which was made in Cape Girardeau, had deteriorated over its 75 years. Published Sept. 27, 1989. Cape Girardeau Mayor Gene Rhodes was the guest speaker at Jefferson School as part of the school's Reading Week program. About 330 students gathered in the playground to listen to the mayor read a short book. Community leaders visited the schools this week to read different books to the students to promote reading.
