Bill Payne of Willoughby Hills, Ohio, predicted that, when he finished his cross-country ride, he would remember Cape Girardeau as the place he lost his hat on the Mississippi River bridge. Here, Payne backed up traffic as he crossed the bridge into Cape Girardeau. Payne, who began his ride on June 14, was riding the horse from Ohio to Malibu, California, to present it as a gift to his daughter. He expected to finish his ride in November.
