Published Sept. 13, 1989. Merlin the Magician, a character from the Walt Disney World on Ice, told kindergarten through third-grade students at Trinity Lutheran School in Cape Girardedau the importance of reading. Merlin took the Adventures in Reading program to schools in the area. The 25-minute program was designed to combat illiteracy. (Southeast Missourian archive)

Published June 26, 1990. Cairo, Illinois, civic leaders announced a proposal for a riverboat gambling operation.
