G.D. Fronabarger was the Southeast Missourian's first photographer, beginning in 1932. Numerous men and women have followed in his footsteps, recording Cape Girardeau's history one image at a time on film. Our latest historic photo galleries -- "Captured on Film" -- feature the talents of these photogs before the age of digital cameras. The galleries that made up "Pictures of the Past" and "Mystery Galleries" may be found at www.semissourian.com/history/. Comments or questions about these photos should be sent to librarian Sharon Sanders at ssanders@semissourian.com.

Cape Girardeau County went two months and 10 days into 1966 before it recorded its first highway traffic fatality. Here Coroner Don Kremer placed the figure "1" in the fatality slot on the big accident board he maintains on his lawn on Highway 61 North. Watching is Sgt. Glenn W. Lampley, zone commander of the State Highway Patrol. While the fatality figure stands at one, the others on the board show the toll taken by accidents in number and in injuries in the county and city.
