Published May 4, 1993. Paul Sander, left, took over as mayor of Jackson Monday night during the city alderman meeting. Five aldermen and a city collector were also sworn in. At right is former mayor Carlton Meyer, who has served 11 years as leader of the city. After handling several items of business, the old council was adjourned for the last time by Meyer, who was then presented his mayor's gavel mounted on a plaque honoring him for his 20-plus years of service to the city of Jackson. Published May 4, 1993. Debra Willis and Michael Sterling of the local NAACP chapter discuss the need for stricter housing regulations in Cape Girardeau at a city council meeting. Published May 16, 1993. Dr. Charles P. McGinty signs copies of his book "Under the Hammer" at TJ Enterprises. The book deals with the inside story of one of the largest bank failures in Missouri history, which involved the First Exchange Corp. of Cape Girardeau. (Southeast Missourian archive)

Published May 7, 1993. About 50 people gathered in front of City Hall to pray for national, state and local leaders as part of the National Day of Prayer.
