Paul Sander, left, took over as mayor of Jackson Monday night during the city alderman meeting. Five aldermen and a city collector were also sworn in. At right is former mayor Carlton Meyer, who has served 11 years as leader of the city. After handling several items of business, the old council was adjourned for the last time by Meyer, who was then presented his mayor's gavel mounted on a plaque honoring him for his 20-plus years of service to the city of Jackson. About 898 first and second grade students in Cape Girardeau public and parochial schools will be receiving a free coloring book from the Missouri Bar Association's Young Lawyers Section through the Cape Girardeau Noon Optimist Club. About 50 people gathered in front of City Hall to pray for national, state and local leaders as part of the National Day of Prayer. They used 1 Timothy 2:1-2 as the basis for praying for those in authority. Another prayer service was held last evening at Capaha Park. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive)
