Published March 23, 1988. Employees of the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department erect a sign at Capaha Park. The sign was originally put up last June for four days before being removed by order of then-city manager Gary Eide on the grounds that neither he nor the City Council had approved it. Published March 29, 1988. "Transportation on the River" is the theme of the 85-foot long, 10-foot high mural that Craig Thomas is painting on the walls of Washington School in Cape Girardeau. The mural, which is a view of Cape Girardeau including several boats on the Mississippi and the river bridge, is funded through the elementary school's PTA and Centerre Bank, Washington School's Adopt-A-School partner. Published March 23, 1993, Wayne Maupin, superintendent of the Jackson School District, explains the proposal for a new middle school to members of the Jackson Chamber of Commerce. Voters will decide April 6 on the $4.7 million bond issue. Following the presentation, members of the Chamber in attendance voted unanimously to endorse the issue. Published Jan. 7, 1983. Traffic at the intersection of Frederick and Independence streets was obstructed for about an hour today while a Missouri Pacific Railroad crew worked to repair tracks just east of the intersection. The 1952-53 Cape Girardeau Central Tigers basketball team receives the city champions trophy from Clarence Vogelsang, representing Farmers & Merchants Bank, on Feb. 20, 1953 at the Arena Building.
