The Downtown Merchants Association will host its annual fund-raiser auction Saturday at Port Cape Girardeau. Planning committee members, from left, Jim Dalaviras, Jayne Ervin, Scott Shivelbine and Chris Tanksley, show off some of the merchandise that will be auctioned. Cape Girardeau Police Ptlm. Randall E. Roddy checks out the department's new radar unit and speed display board in the 1200 block of Perryville Road today. The department will use the equipment to allow motorists to check the accuracy of their vehicle speedometers on Mount Auburn Road from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. The 41 miles per hour displayed on the board, by the way, is 11 miles above the 30-mile-per-hour speed limit in the 1200 block of Perryville Road. The driver of the vehicle on which the unit was focused was not ticketed, however. (Fred Lynch ~ Southeast Missourian archive)

This picture was made possibly in 1944 of what may have been one of the largest crowds to see a baseball game at Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau. It was when the St. Louis Browns held their spring training in Cape Girardeau. The Browns were playing their minor league affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens. The Browns trained here 1943-45 and the Mud Hens were here 1944-45. (G.D.
